In this story, the lady, who is a big fan of the author’s stories, manages to catch the author’s attention and impress him. About the Author

William Somerset Maugham was born in Paris and his childhood was spent in a French-speaking society. After the death of his father, he returned to England at the age of 10. He was educated at Heidelberg university. Then he went to St Thomas hospital in London to study medicine.

The author met a woman who likes his stories when he was living in Paris twenty years ago. She has read one of his books and even wrote him a letter expressing her opinions. She sends him another letter, moved by his admiration, informing him of her impending trip to Paris and her desire to have a small lunch at Foyot, a prestigious eatery that French senators frequent. However, William is not financially well-off and never even considered visiting such an upscale establishment. Despite this, he lacks the ability to refuse her request.

The author made a decision to exclude coffee from his luncheon order as a means of staying within his budget of fifteen Francs. This allowed him to allocate more funds for his upcoming meals over the next two weeks. He scheduled a meeting with the lady on Thursday at noon. The woman was in her forties and friendly but not very attractive. The author got mutton chops, which were the cheapest thing on the menu but she selected expensive options such as salmon and Caviare from the menu while he chose the most affordable dish, muttonchops.

After the meal, the woman called for white champagne. William was thinking about how much the meal was costing while she kept enjoying it and talking about art, writing, and music. As the waiter approached with the bill, she dismissively waved him away and confidently ordered the extravagantly priced Asparagus dish. William felt a sinking feeling in his heart, his mouth watering at the thought of the delectable dish. However, he had to suppress his desires and control his emotions.

While she was doing this, she kept saying, “I never ate anything for lunch, just a bite.” William started to think about how he could make it look like someone had stolen his wallet. The head waiter then came over to the table with a big basket full of huge peaches, which added to the bill even more.

The bill was finally paid. The narrator had no money left for the month and only a few Francs for the tip. In twenty years, William thinks he got his revenge when he met her weighing 136 kilogrammes.
