Wanda lived at Boggins Heights. It seems that it was a place far away from the school and also, where there was a lot of dry mud, thereby indicating that it was not a very rich locality.

3. When and why do Peggy and Maddie notice Wanda’s absence?


Peggie and Maddie noticed Wanda’s absence three days later, on Wednesday. Wanda delayed them getting to school for three days. They waited for her to arrive so they could have some fun, but she didn’t show up.

4. What do you think ‘to have fun with her’ means?


‘To have fun with her’ means that Peggy and Maddie would have teased Wanda and made fun of her for their own enjoyment.

1. In what way was Wanda different from the other children?


Unlike other children, Wanda had no friends. She came to school alone and went home alone. She always wore a faded blue dress that didn’t fit properly. She never talked to anyone.

2. Did Wanda have a hundred dresses? Why do you think she said she did?


No, she did not have a hundred dresses because she was poor and wore the same faded dress to school every day. She said this to counter the fun of other children. They made fun of her due to her only one dress.

3. Why is Maddie embarrassed by the questions Peggy asks Wanda? Is she also like Wanda, or is she different?


As a poor person herself, Maddie was embarrassed by the questions Peggy asked Wanda. She usually wore old clothes, which someone else had passed down to her. She did not feel sorry for Wanda. In the future, she was worried that everyone might tease her as well. She knew she would never claim to have a hundred dresses, since she was not as poor as Wanda. However, she was afraid that she would be mocked as well by the others.

1. Why didn’t Maddie ask Peggy to stop teasing Wanda? What was she afraid of?


Maddie didn’t ask Peggy to stop teasing Wanda because she lacked courage to say so. She was afraid of losing her friendship with Peggy.

2. Who did Maddie think would win the drawing contest? Why?


Maddie thought that Peggy would win the girls’ medal. It was so as she drew better than anyone else in the room.

3. Who won the drawing contest? What had the winner drawn?


Peggy’s drawings always won prizes in the past. Now Wanda Petronski has won the girls’ medal. In fact, she has drawn a hundred designs. All were different and beautiful. The judges judged that any one of the drawings was worth winning. They all had a strange magic to them.

Thinking about the Text

1. How is Wanda seen as different by the other girls? How do they treat her?


Wanda did not have any friends. She went to school alone and went home alone. She wore faded blue dresses that did not fit her properly. Unlike others, she never talked to anyone.

2. How does Wanda feel about the dresses game? Why does she say that she has a hundred dresses?


In Wanda’s opinion, it is cruel of the girls to ask her about one hundred dresses. She says that she has a hundred dresses. The other children used to make fun of her poverty, and would have laughed at her whatever she might have said. It is to counter the fun other girls make of her.

3. Why does Maddie stand by and not do anything ? How is she different from Peggy ? (Was Peggy’s friendship important to Maddie ? Why ? Which lines in the text tell you this ?)


Peggy is the most popular girl in the class. Maddie has not the courage to offend her. Moreover, she values her friendship with Peggy. She thinks that “Peggy could not possibly do anything that was really wrong’.

4. What does Miss Mason think of Wanda’s drawings ? What do the children think of them ? How do you know?


Miss Mason told the students that she was proud of Wanda because she had drawn one hundred dresses, each of which was beautiful and unique, which she said should make Room Thirteen proud. Her statement was that any drawing could win the prize in the opinion of the judges. She was very pleased to announce Wanda as the winner. She hoped she would return the next day since Wanda was absent that day. She then asked the entire class to look at Wanda’s exquisite drawings. Everyone stopped in admiration and whistled or murmured admirably as the drawings were shown. As soon as Miss Mason announced that Wanda had won, the children erupted in applause, and even the boys jumped up and whistled. Upon entering the room, Peggy and Maddie gasped, realizing that the designs were the same as those Wanda had described to them. And in the end, Peggy exclaimed, “…and I thought I could draw.” This shows that she also realized how good Wanda’s drawings were.

II. The Narrative Voice
