Chapter 1 A Letter to God Class 10 English First Flight NCERT Notes and Summary
Lencho was a farmer. His house was only one house located on the top of a hill. A good harvest was needed for his fields. He looked to the sky, hoping for rain. Big drops of rain began falling during dinner. He stepped outside to feel the rain. He was satisfied. In Lencho’s mind, the raindrops were like coins. Big drops were worth ten cents, and little drops were worth five cents each. Suddenly, a strong wind blew. He was alarmed.
With the rain came large hailstones that looked like silver coins. They covered the house, the fields and the hillside, leaving no leaves on the trees. The corn was destroyed. So were the flowers. Lencho was deeply troubled. He uttered that there was nobody to help them. There would be no corn that year.
In Lencho’s opinion, the only hope was God’s help. He wrote a letter the following Sunday asking God for help, telling him that if he didn’t do so, his entire family would die. He needed a hundred pesos so he could sow his field again and survive until the next harvest. ‘To God’ was written on the envelope, a stamp was placed on it, and it was dropped in the mailbox.
After receiving this letter, a postman laughed heartily upon seeing the address. He showed it to the postmaster, who became serious upon seeing the letter. He remarked that the writer believed in God deeply. Postmaster decided not to shake his faith in God by not answering the letter. He sent Lencho 70 pesos, the entire amount of money he had collected, in an envelope filled with money from his employees. He gave a part of his salary as well.
His faith in God was firm and unshaken. Although he did expect help from God, he was not surprised when he received the money. But his happiness lasted for a short period of time. His anger grew when he counted the money. He believed that God would never deceive him.
He wrote a letter, fixed a stamp on it, and tipped it into the mail box. The postmaster opened it. It said, “God, only seventy pesos have reached me. Please send the rest not through the mail because the post office employees are a bunch of crooks.”.
