Israelis discover 'world's longest salt cave'
- Israeli researchers have discovered the world’s longest salt cave named ‘Malham’.
- The cave stretches for over 10-kilometres (6.25 miles), through Mount Sodom (Israel’s largest mountain) and spills out to the southwest corner of the adjacent Dead Sea.
- It was mapped out over two years by cavers from nine countries, led by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
- In 2006, researchers mapped over six-kilometres of the N3 cave in southern Iran’s Qeshm island.
Venezuela Juan barred from public office
- Venezuela has barred opposition leader Juan Guaido from holding public office for 15 years.
- The decision was taken following an investigation that shows irregularities in his financial records.
- The decision will be for the maximum period established in the decree with the scope, courage and strength of the law against corruption.
UNSC’s resolution to fight terrorist financing
- UNSC has unanimously passed the first-ever resolution ordering members to enforce laws against terror financing.
- UNSC resolution demands all states “ensure that their domestic laws and regulations establish serious criminal offenses” to collect funds or financial resources to terrorist groups or individual criminals.
- Nations that fail to carry out the resolution would face U.N. sanctions.
RBI set to bring back ‘exotic currency bets’
- After a decade, the Reserve Bank of India is set to lift the ban on ‘exotic currency derivatives.
- They are the double-edged, fancy products that were banned in 2007-08 amid allegations of mis-selling.
- Shaktikanta Das is the Governor of RBI.
Coffee Board activated marketplace
- Commerce Secretary, Dr.AnupWadhawan, launched blockchain based coffee e-marketplace through video conferencing in New Delhi on 28 March 2019.
- This pilot project will help integrate the farmers with markets in a transparent manner.
- It will also reduce the number of layers between coffee growers and buyers and help farmers double their income.
Adani Becomes 1st Indian Port Operator to Record 200 MMT Cargo Movement
- Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) announced that it has recorded cargo movement of more than 200 million metric tonnes (MMT) at nine ports along the east and west coasts, becoming the first Indian port operator to achieve the milestone.
- Adani Ports embarked its journey in 2001 and has become one of the largest port operators in the world.
Amartya Sen to be honored Bodley Award
- Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen was awarded the prestigious Bodley Medal.
- It is the highest honor granted by the University of Oxford’s world-famous Bodleian Libraries.
- The medal is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the fields in which the Bodleian is awarded are, including literature, culture, science, and communication.
Manohar appointed as Deputy CM of Goa
- Goa Minister for Tourism and Sports, Manohar Ajgaonkar has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state.
- Ajgaonkar had left the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) to join the BJP.
- Newly-inducted BJP MLA Deepak Pauskar was also inducted into Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s cabinet.
Veteran Journalist Prafulla Rajguru Passes Away At 82
- Veteran journalist and academician Prafulla Rajguru passed away at the age of 82.
- Rajguru had retired as the head of the department of English from DCB Girls College in Jorhat in 1997.
- Rajguru authored four books and was a member of several social organizations like the Asom Sahitya Sabha.
Tashigang in Himachal Pradesh Becomes World’s Highest Polling Station
- Tashigang, a Himachal Pradesh village at an altitude of 15,256 feet has now become the highest polling station in the world.
- Situated about 29 km from the India-China border, the polling station covers two villages, Tashigang and Gate.
