Feroz Shah Kotla Cricket Ground in Delhi is set to be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium

  • The governing body of Cricket activities in the Delhi state, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has decided to rename the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi as Arun Jaitley Stadium in the memory of the cricket body’s former president who passed away on August 24, 2019.
  • He served as the president of the DDCA from 1999 to 2013.

India, Australia & France to jointly create inclusive Indo-Pacific

  • India, France and Australia, in a major strategic move, plans trilaterals that would help to re-balance China in the Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of growing Indo-French & Indo-Australia & Australia-France partnership across the vast region.
  • The first meet of this initiative that would contribute to making the Indo-Pacific region inclusive is expected to be organised later this year in France, ET has learnt.

US approves $3.3 bn sale of anti-ballistic missiles to Japan

  • United States approved the USD 3.3 billion sale of anti-ballistic missiles to Japan.
  • Japan will buy up to 73 of the Raytheon-made SM-3 Block IIA missiles, which are designed to be fired by the ship-board Aegis system to intercept incoming ballistic missile.

RBI Board Approves Surplus Transfer of Rs 1.76 Lakh Crore to Govt as it Accepts Bimal Jalan Panel Recommendation

  • The government will receive a windfall from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the current financial year thanks to a much higher-than-expected dividend.
  • The decision by a committee specifically set up to look at whether the RBI was holding on to too much of its reserves recommended that it provide the government with Rs 1.76 lakh crore as a dividend in the bank’s fiscal year that ended June 30.

Pramod Agarwal to succeed Coal India chairman AK Jha

  • Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has selected Pramod Agarwal, a 1991 batch IAS from Madhya Pradesh cadre as the next chairman of Coal India.
  • He will take over after the present chairman A K Jha retires in January 2020.

Akademik Lomonosov: World’s first floating nuclear reactor of Russia launched in Arctic

  • A huge vessel, the world’s only floating nuclear power plant, has left its dock in the Russian port of Murmansk and is on its way to the arctic town of Pevek despite opposition from environmental groups.
  • The 144 metres long and 30 metres wide vessel, named the Akademik Lomonosov after the 18th-century Russian scientist, houses two nuclear reactors.

  • ISRO is developing own spacesuits to be used in India’s first-ever manned space mission, the ₹10,000-crore ‘Gaganyaan’ mission.
  • A spacesuit typically costs around a billion dollars.

The air forces of China and Pakistan began joint exercise ‘Shaheen-VIII’ near Ladakh

  • The air forces of China and Pakistan began joint exercise Labelled ‘Shaheen-VIII’ in the Chinese city of Holton, close to the Indian border of around 300 km north of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
  • This is the 8th such exercise undertaken by two countries with the participation of Chinese J10 & J-11 and Pakistani JF-17s planes.

India’s first woman DGP Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya passed away in Mumbai

  • On August 26, 2019, India’s first woman Director General of Police (DGP), Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra after an illness.
  • She was born in Himachal Pradesh and lived in Amritsar, Punjab and Delhi. She was the second woman IPS (Indian Police Service) officer of India after Kiran Bedi.

Former Indian Navy Commander Noel Kelman, passed away

  • On August 23, 2019, Goa born Kirti Chakra(peacetime gallantry award) awardee, Commander Noel Kelman, passed away at the age of 92 in Porvorim, Goa due to old age ailments.
  • His funeral took place on Monday at the Holy Family Church Cemetery here and was attended by several serving and retired Naval officers.

Mamata scheme for PVTG women in Odisha extended for five years

  • The Odisha government has extended benefits of the Direct Cash Benefit “Mamata” scheme to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) in the state for another five years.
  • While pregnant women of other communities can avail the conditional cash transfer maternity benefit scheme only up to two live births, PVTG women are barred from the limit.
