Italy, China ink new 'Silk Road' protocol

  • Italy has signed a non-binding protocol with China to take part in Beijing’s new Silk Road of transport and trade links stretching from Asia to Europe.
  • Italy became the first G7 country to sign up for the project.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte both attended a ceremony in Rome for the signing of 29 Memoranda of Understanding (MoU), which Italian media said were worth 5.6 to 8 billion US Dollars.

Sri Lanka President hands over a proposal to declare Tripitaka as World Heritage

  • Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena handed over a proposal seeking to declare the Theravada Tripitaka as a UNESCO World Heritage.
  • The Theravada Tripitaka (sacred scripture of Buddhists) was declared as a National heritage of Sri Lanka by President in January this year.
  • Buddha’s preaching was propagated through the word to mouth for generations till the Tripitaka was finally written down in Sri Lanka about 100 years BC.

Trump Sign Proclamation Recognising Israel’s Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

  • US President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation recognising Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights and told the visiting Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that Israel has an absolute right to self-defence.
  • Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 war but its sovereignty over the territory is not recognized by the international community.
  • Over the past years terrorist groups in southern Syria continued to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks against Israel.

Suresh Raina became first player to score 5000 runs in IPL

  • Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina has become the first ever cricketer to reach 5,000 runs in Indian Premier League.
  • During the ongoing IPL 2019 opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Raina achieved the feat as soon as he touched the individual score of 15.
  • Raina is followed by India skipper Virat Kohli, who has 4,954 runs from 164 games, containing four hundred and 34 fifties.

  • The Amateur International Boxing Federation (AIBA) President Gafur Rahimov announced his resignation claiming that political based discussions were harming the organizations progress. Rahimov will be replaced by an interim president.
  • Rahimov was elected in November 018 despite being on the U.S. Treasury Department’s sanctions list “for providing material support” to a criminal organization.

Naresh Goyal Steps Down from Jet Airways Board

  • Jet Airways Founders Naresh Goyal and wife Anita Goyal have stepped down from the board of the cash-strapped airline. With this, Naresh Goyal ceases to be Chairman.
  • Another director Kevin Knight has also resigned. The board has accepted their resignations.
  • The board also approved the issue of 11.4 crore equity shares to the lenders upon conversion of Re 1 of the outstanding debt. Lenders will infuse up to Rs 1,500 crore via debt instruments.

ISRO Set to Launch 29 Satellites Including EMISAT

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch 29 satellites including the primary payload EMISAT, on the first of April.
  • Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C45 will take off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota tentatively at 9:30 AM carrying the satellites onboard.
  • EMISAT has been developed for monitoring radar network by India.
  • EMISAT, weighing 436 kg, is intended for electromagnetic spectrum measurement.
  • It will be placed in an orbit of about 753 km altitude.
  • The customer payloads are from Lithuania, Spain, Switzerland and the US. They will be hurled into space at an altitude of about 505 km.

IAF inducts first four heavy-lift Chinook helicopters

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) on March 25 inducted the four heavy-lift Chinook helicopters at Chandigarh’s Air Force Station 12 Wing.
  • It was announced by Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa during the induction at a ceremony held at Air Force base in Chandigarh.

  • In accordance with the preliminary world airport traffic rankings for 2018 released by Airports Council International (ACI), Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) of New Delhi has elevated 4 ranks to reach at 12th spot in terms of the busiest airport as compared to 2017’s 16th spot.
  • The list of world’s busiest airports by passenger traffic ranking has been topped by Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (US) followed by Beijing Capital International Airport (China) and Dubai International Airport (UAE).
