  • India has opened its first specialized hydrotherapy treatment centre for elephants suffering from arthritis, joint pain and foot ailments.
  • It is situated in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.
  • It is a collaboration of Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and the NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), Wildlife SOS.

Union Government Restored ‘ration in kind’ to military officers in peace areas

  • On June 18, 2019, the government of India has brought back the provision of ‘ration in kind’ to military officers in peace areas by approving proposal given by the Ministry of Defence.
  • The decision is taken by the new Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
  • The facility was withdrawn by the government in 2017 and it started paying a certain amount in instead of the ration to defence personnel.
  • The decision to withdraw the provision of ‘ration in kind’ had met with criticism from several quarters within the three services of the armed forces.

Saudi Arabia becomes first Arab country to be granted full membership of FATF

  • Saudi Arabia has become the first Arab country to be granted full membership of the Financial Action Task Force.
  • Now, FATF has 39 full members, including the permanent members of the UN Security Council and most countries of the G-20.
  • The Kingdom’s accession comes as the FATF celebrates its 30th anniversary of its first meeting held in Paris in 1989.
  • Saudi Arabia had been a founding member of the MENA arm of the group since November 2004, and its full membership comes after it was reported the Kingdom had made “tangible progress” and for its efforts in implementing the FATF’s guidelines.

India, France decide to deepen cooperation in cyber security sector

  • India & France have decided to deepen the cooperation in the cybersecurity sector & work towards curbing the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes & online radicalization.
  • The decision was taken at the third Indo-French cyber dialogue in Paris.
  • During this dialogue, both parties shared their threat analysis and presented the latest developments in their respective cyber policies and steps taken for the protection of critical national infrastructure.
  • According to the joint statement issued after the dialogue, France and India have reaffirmed their commitment to open, reliable, secure, stable and peaceful cyberspace.

India ranked 20th among the top capital importing countries by Knight Frank

  • Capital investment in commercial real estate by Indian investors in overseas markets soared by 92 percent to $700 million (around 4,893 crore) between the first quarter of 2018 and the first quarter of this year.
  • Investors tapped the overseas market to diversify risk and increase their returns, the report by global property consultant Knight Frank said.
  • The UK, the Netherlands, Germany, the US and Australia were the top destinations for Indian capital investments.

RBI assigns SBI as lead bank in three new districts in Telangana, MP

  • RBI has assigned lead bank responsibility to SBI for 2 new dists (Mulugu & Narayanpet) in Telangana & 1 dist (Niwari) in MP.
  • Lead bank acts as a leader for coordinating the efforts of credit inst. in the allotted districts to increase the flow of credit.
  • It has been decided to assign the lead bank responsibility of the new districts.
  • The SBI will act as the lead bank in the two new districts of Telangana – Mulugu and Narayanpet, and one district in Madhya Pradesh – Niwari.

NHB issued stricter norms on HFCs’ capital adequacy ratios

  • The National Housing Bank (NHB) has tightened the norms on leverage and capital adequacy ratio for Housing Finance Companies (HFCs).
  • It mandated the HFCs to reduce their total borrowings in a phased manner to not more than 12 times( at present 16 times) of their Net-Owned Funds (NOF) as on March 31, 2022.
  • Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) Housing Finance is the only HFC to have the highest leverage ratio of 14 times of NOF.

Pranati Nayak wins bronze at Asian Artistic Gymnastic Championship

  • In Gymnastics, India’s Pranati Nayak clinched a bronze medal in the vault event at the Senior Asian Artistic Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
  • China’s Yu Linmin and Japan’s Ayaka Sakaguchi won the gold and silver medal at the same event.
  • The 23-year-old from West Bengal, who had qualified for vault finals with a sixth place, came up with a score of 13.384 to claim the bronze medal.
  • She had scored 13.400 and 13.367 in the first and second vault respectively.

  • World famous handcrafted footwear, Kolhapuri chappal gets a Geographic Indication (GI) tag from The Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Mark.
  • The tag was given to the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, covering four districts each.
  • The iconic footwear was granted the GI tag recently but the local artisans are far from jubilant.

Scientists develop cancer cell detection ‘dots’ from coal in Assam

  • In Assam, a team of Scientists from CSIR-NEIST (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research-North East Institute of Science and Technology) have developed a chemical process that turns ‘dirty’ coal into biomedical ‘Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs)’ which helps in detection of cancer cells.
  • For producing CQDs, cheap, low-quality and high-sulfur coals used by the team led by Binoy Kumar Saikia and Tonkeswar Das for a patent of their chemical method.
  • The details have been published in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology.

Navy launches executes Operation Sankalp

  • Indian Navy launched Operation Sankalp in the Gulf of Oman to re-assure Indian Flagged Vessels operating via Persian Gulf & Gulf of Oman.
  • INS Chennai and INS Sunayna have deployed to undertake maritime operations.
  • The situation in the region got tense after an attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman last week and four tankers off the United Arab Emirates on May 12.
  • While the US and Saudi Arabia have blamed Iran for the incidents, Iran has vehemently denied any involvement in the attack.
