India has achieved its 2022 target of tiger population in the country

  • With an increase of nearly 33% since the last census in 2014, the total tiger count has touched 2,967, according to the All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018.
  • As per the tiger count maintained by the government, the population of the Asian cat has been increasing at a rate of 6% per annum when consistently sampled areas were compared from 2006 to 2018.
  • The population was recorded at 1,411, which increased to 2,226 in 2014. As per the latest count, it is now estimated to be 2,967.

Nepal invited as Gita Jayanti Mahotsav 2019 partner

  • Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister of Haryana has invited Nepal to be the partner country for 2019 International Gita Jayanti Mahotsav scheduled to be held at Kurukshetra, Haryana from December 3 to 8,2019.
  • Khattar made this offer to Nilamber Acharya, Ambassador of Nepal to India.
  • The chief minister said Haryana has been celebrating Gita Jayanti Mahotsav for the last three years and every year a country is invited to become the partner country for the mega event.

BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting 2019 held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Foreign Ministers Meet was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 25-26, 2019.
  • India was represented by Gen. (retd) VK Singh who is the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways.

Mary Kom, Simranjit Kaur win gold in President's Cup Boxing Tournament

  • 6-time world champion Mary Kom in 51kg category and Simranjit Kaur in 60kg category grabbed a gold each in 23rd President’s Cup Boxing Tournament in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia.
  • Indian boxers finished their campaign in the Tournament with nine medals.

Badri Narain Sharma re-appointed Chairperson of National Anti-profiteering Authority for 2 years

  • On July 25, 2019, the appointment committee of cabinet (ACC), Government of India has re-appointed Badri Narain Sharma (1985-batch IAS officer from Rajasthan) as chairman of the National Anti-profiteering Authority (NAA).
  • He will continue as the NAA chairman for two years.
  • The Appointments Committee of Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the name of Sharma, a 1985-batch IAS officer from Rajasthan, “for re-appointment for a period beyond July 31”.
  • At present the NAA has three members — J C Chauhan, chairman, tax tribunal, Himachal Pradesh; and Indian Revenue Service officers R Bhagyadevi and Amand Shah.

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir retires from Test cricket

  • On July 26, 2019, Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir (27) announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect citing his desire to concentrate on white-ball cricket.
  • Amir, who took 17 wickets at the recent World Cup, will continue to play one-day and Twenty20 international cricket.
  • After making his Test debut aged 17 against Sri Lanka in 2009, he was one of three Pakistan players jailed for a plot to bowl deliberate no-balls in a Test against England in 2010.

Indian scientists from ARIES discovered 28 new stars in Milky Way

  • A team of scientists at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) in Nainital district of Uttarakhand has discovered 28 new variable stars in Milky Way galaxy.
  • ARIES Director Wahab Uddin described the finding of the new variable stars, whose luminosity or brightness keeps changing, as a “rare achievement”.
  • It is for the first time that variable stars have been identified in Globular cluster NGC 4147 in the constellation of Coma Berenices, former director of ARIES, Anil Pande, who now works at the institute as a senior scientist, said.
