  • The objective of local currency financing is to provide more options to borrowers.
  • The bank’s treasury has begun work on it and the swap mechanism is in place, so it would be easy to carry it out in India.

India’s track and field legend PT Usha nominated for IAAF’s ‘Veteran Pin’

  • India’s track and field legend PT Usha has been nominated for the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) ‘Veteran Pin’ for her outstanding service to the sport.
  • Usha is often called the “queen of track and field”. She won five gold medals — 100 metres(m), 200m, 400m, 400 m hurdles and the 4×400 m relay — besides a bronze in the Asian Games which were held at Jakarta in 1985 .
  • “We are delighted that you have been nominated by your Area Association as a recipient of the IAAF Veteran Pin for your long and meritorious service to the cause of World Athletics,” the IAAF CEO Jon Ridgeon informed Usha in a letter.

World Media hails India's successful launch of Chandrayaan – 2

  • The 3,850-kg Chandrayaan-2 was launched on Monday after a technical snag forced the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to abort the planned July 15 mission.
  • The Lander and the Rover are expected to touch down near the Lunar South Pole in early September, becoming the first ever spacecraft to land in that region.
  • The Lunar South Pole remains unexplored till date.
  • The launch of Chandrayaan-2 comes at the heels of the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11, when man first landed on the moon.

IIT Madras students develop 'Agricopter' to eliminate manual spraying of pesticides

  • Students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have developed a “smart agricopter” to eliminate manual spraying of pesticides in agricultural fields and help identify crop health by using a imaging camera.
  • The innovation will allow spraying pesticides ten times faster and with 100% precision at the same cost as manual spraying.
  • Students at the Centre For Innovation, IIT Madras, identified manual pesticide spraying as an extremely hazardous activity as it endangered farmers’ and labourers’ health and resulted in a massive overuse of toxic chemicals.

Indian Navy commissions fifth Dornier Aircraft Squadron in Chennai

  • Indian Navy is all set to commission the fifth Dornier aircraft squadron, Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on 22 July 19.
  • The new air squadron is scheduled to be commissioned by Admiral Karambir Singh Chief of the naval staff at Naval Air Enclave, Meenambakkam.
  • The squadron will operate the indigenous Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)-built maritime surveillance version multi-role Dornier 228 Short Range Maritime reconnaissance aircraft from Chennai Airport.
