15th Finance Commission held a meeting with representatives of ADCs of Meghalaya

  • 15th Finance Commission headed by the Chairman Shri N.K. Singh held meeting with the representatives of Autonomous Development Councils (ADCs) of Meghalaya as part of its visit to the State.
  • There are 3 ADCs in Meghalaya namely the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
  • There are 3 Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Meghalaya namely the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
  • Except for a small part of the area under the Shillong Municipality, the entire state is covered by the District Councils.
  • Term of the District Councils is for five years from the date of their constitution.

India’s first Dinosaur Museum inaugurated in Gujarat

  • On June 8, 2019, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the new Dinosaur Museum-cum-Park at Raiyoli village in Balasinor town of Mahisagar district.
  • A government release claimed the museum and park, situated in Raiyoli village in Balanisor taluka, was the country’s first such facility and the world’s third.
  • The museum, with ten galleries, shows the history of dinosaurs, which existed some 65 million years ago, from origin to extinction.

  • The Narendra Modi Government has decided to institute the Antarashtriya Yoga Diwas Media Samman in order to encourage the media to help propagate Yoga during the run-up to International Yoga Day on June 21.
  • In all, 33 awards will be given out, 11 each in the three main formats — print, radio and television.
  • The practice and propagation of yoga has led to healthy life, healthy living, wellness and prevention of disease. “Yoga is one of India’s gifts to the world and has become the mantra of New India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • AIIB has made its 1st investment in Nepal with the provision of up to $90m loan to help fund a $650m hydropower project.
  • It has approved the loan for the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project expected to increase Nepal’s power generation by almost 20%.

‘National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031’ adopted by the Cabinet of UAE

  • On June 9, 2019, The Cabinet of United Arab Emirates (UAE) adopted a 12-year strategy ‘National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031’ during its meeting at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi.
  • It will be chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
  • The National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031 aims to make the UAE a world leader in quality of life by launching 90 new projects that will improve the “physical, psychological and digital health of future generations”.
  • Along with the formation of a National Wellbeing Council to manage and coordinate the national strategy, it will monitor a number of indicators of wellbeing in the UAE, submit regular reports to the UAE Cabinet, propose training programs for government employees and launch of the Academy of Wellbeing future generations.

Tokayev elected as Kazakh president

  • Kazakhstan’s interim president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, chosen successor of veteran ruler Nursultan Nazarbayev who retains sweeping powers, has won a snap presidential election with nearly 71 per cent of the vote, according to early results.
  • Nazarbayev, who ruled oil producer Kazakhstan for almost three decades, handpicked the 66-year-old career diplomat as his successor when he stepped down in March.

  • On June 7, 2019, State Bank of India (SBI) announced to introduce repo-linked home loan product from July 1, 2019.

  • Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg (16), has won the Amnesty International’s, “Ambassador of Conscience award” for fighting against the peril of global warming.
  • She is a Swedish teenage climate activist and a fierce campaigner who began protesting outside Swedish parliament in August 2018.
  • The Amnesty award justifies that every young person taking part in ‘Fridays for Future’ embodies what it means to act on your conscience.

Mount Sinabung erupts in western Indonesia

Veteran actor and playwright Girish Karnad passed away at 81

  • On June 10, 2019, Noted Actor, writer, and playwright Girish Karnad was passed away due to multiple-organ failure in Bengaluru at the age of 81.
  • He was a recipient of 1998 Jnanpith award, 1974 Padma Shri and 1992 Padma Bhushan award for literature.
  • Karnad made his acting and screenwriting debut with a Kannada film named ‘Samskara’ in 1970 and was conferred with Padma Shri award in 1974 for contributions to theatre.
