BJD's Chandrani Murmu became the youngest MP in India’s history

  • Odisha’s Chandrani Murmu (25 years and 11 months) has become the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) to the 17th Lok Sabha.
  • Chandrani Murmu was elected as Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate from the tribal-dominated Keonjhar seat.
  • Odisha has a total of seven women MPs, making it the first state ever to have 33% or the largest share of women MPs of its total of 21 seats.
  • Indian National Lok Dal’s Dushyant Chautala (26-years) from the Hisar Lok Sabha was the youngest MP in the 16th Lok Sabha (2014).

Equator Prize 2019 won by Deccan Development Society

  • The women sangams (groups) of the Deccan Development Society (DDS) have bagged the United Nation’s Equator Prize for 2019.
  • They have been selected for standing as ‘an outstanding example of a local, nature-based solution to climate change and sustainable development.’
  • The women farmers, majority of them are Dalits, have been building their own seed banks and growing millets in the predominantly rain-fed villages of Sangareddy district.
  • To mark the achievement, the DDS felicitated six women for their contribution to the ecology and innovations in rainfed millet cultivation on June 5.

African Union suspends Sudan

  • The African Union (AU) on 06 June suspended Sudan until the establishment of civilian rule, intensifying global pressure on its new military leaders to stand down after the worst violence since Omar al-Bashir’s fall in April.
  • The European Union endorsed the AU’s decision, saying it “establishes clear criteria for the restoration of a peaceful and credible political process” in Sudan.
  • It also urged foreign powers to refrain from interference in Sudan’s affairs and called for the release of Yasir Arman, the deputy head of the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North who was arrested at his residence in Khartoum on 05 June.

World Oceans Day being observed globally

  • World Oceans Day (WOD) is observed every year on 8th June to provide an opportunity to take personal and community action to conserve the ocean and its resources.
  • The theme of World Oceans Day- 2019 is “Gender and Oceans”.
  • The main action focus is to prevent plastic pollution and encourage solutions for a healthy ocean.
  • The Ocean Project has promoted and coordinated World Oceans Day globally since 2002.

Maldives confers highest civilian honour on Narendra Modi

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Maldives’ highest civilian award, the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzudeen, by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on 8 June.
  • The award is in recognition of the many services Prime Minister Modi has offered to cement the longstanding and amicable ties between the two countries, and for the magnanimous assistance that the Indian government continues to provide to the Maldives under his stewardship.

2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Starts in France

  • The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup (8th edition) started in France from 7 June to 7 July 2019.
  • The quadrennial international football championship contested by the twenty-four women’s national teams. (from 6 confederations).
  • The Championship held in nine cities across France.
  • In March 2015, France won the right to host the event, the first time the country will host the tournament, and the third time a European nation will.

Rafael Nadal wins 12th French Open, 18th Grand Slam title

  • Rafael Nadal swept to an historic 12th Roland Garros title and 18th Grand Slam crown on 09 June with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Austria’s Dominic Thiem.
  • The 33-year-old Spaniard becomes the first player, man or woman, to win the same Slam 12 times.
  • Nadal is now just two behind Roger Federer’s all-time record of 20 majors and three ahead of Novak Djokovic who was knocked out by Thiem in the semifinals.
  • It also gave Nadal an 82nd career title and 950th match win.

Culture Minister inaugurates exhibition-‘Unknown masterpieces of Himachal Folk Art’

  • Culture Minister Prahalad Singh Patel has inaugurated the exhibition titled Unknown Masterpieces of Himachal Folk Art at National Museum in New Delhi.
  • The Exhibition is being jointly organised by the National Museum and Home of Folk Art, Gurugram in which more than 240 artefacts displayed.
  • The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the Folk-art tradition of Himachal Pradesh.
  • It will remain open for public till 31st of next month.

Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel takes oath as new CJI of Delhi High Court

  • Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel (59-years) was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
  • Lt Governor Anil Baijal administered the oath of office to Justice Patel at a function held at Raj Niwas.
  • Earlier, Justice Patel was posted at the Jharkhand High Court (from 24th of May 2019 to 6th June, 2019).
  • The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name for the appointment as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

ISRO to launch Chandrayaan-2 between July 9-16

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has found a suitable window to launch India’s second spacecraft to the moon, ‘Chandrayaan-2’ between July 9 and July 16 with an expected soft landing on the moon on September 6.
  • ISRO sources have confirmed that GSLV Mark-III will launch Chandrayaan-2 from Sriharikota during the favoured window time.
  • All three modules of the moon mission, Orbiter, Lander-Vikram and Rover-Pragyan are ready.
  • The modules underwent tests in the ISRO satellite Integration and test establishment campus in Bengaluru and are ready to be shifted to Sriharikota spaceport of ISRO.
  • India is standing on a cusp of creating history by becoming the only country in the world to launch a rover in the lunar South Pole.
