  • Narendra Modi was sworn in as the prime minister for a second term on May 30, helming a 58-member ministry with BJP chief Amit Shah making his debut at the Centre and former foreign secretary S. Jaishankar emerging as a surprise pick, while party veteran Sushma Swaraj was among the outgoing ministers who found no place.
  • Two former chief ministers – Ramesh Pokhriyal (Uttarakhand) and Arjun Munda (Jharkhand) – have taken oath as Union ministers for the first time.

James Marape elected as new PM of Papua New Guinea

  • James Marape, a former finance minister and critic of a major global gas development deal, has been elected by parliament as the prime minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG).
  • His appointment comes after the outgoing leader Peter O’Neill resigned on Wednesday.
  • He was elected by MPs who voted 101 to 8, to make him the next leader.

FICCI survey forecasts India's GDP growth at 7.1% for FY20

  • The country’s median GDP is forecast at 7.1 per cent for FY20 and 7.2 per cent for FY 21.
  • The industry body FICCI’s economic outlook survey said that the minimum and maximum growth estimate stood at 6.8 per cent and 7.3 per cent, for 2019-20.
  • The survey was conducted in May 2019 among economists belonging to the industry, banking and financial services sectors.

Playwright and journalist Annie Zaidi wins Nine Dots Prize

  • Indian playwright and journalist Annie Zaidi was announced the winner of the 2019 Nine Dots Prize for her essay Bread, Cement, Cactus.
  • The Nine Dots Prize is a book prize for creative thinking that tackles contemporary societal issues.
  • Entrants for the prize are asked to respond to a question in 3,000 words and the winner receives $100,000 (Rs 69.83 lakh) to write a short book expanding on the essay’s idea.
  • The question this year was “Is there still no place like home?”

Jefferies appoints Chris Wood as global head of equity strategy.

  • Jefferies has appointed Christopher Wood as global head of equity strategy.
  • Wood, who joins from Asian securities house CLSA, has been ranked the top equity strategist in almost all major broker polls in Asia during the last two decades.
  • Wood’s team also includes Frances Lai and Joe Man.

World No Tobacco Day celebrated on 31st May

  • May 31 is observed as World No Tobacco Day.
  • The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2019 is “tobacco and lung health”, focusing on the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health and overall well-being.
  • According to World Health Organization (WHO), India contributes to 12% of the total population of world smokers.
  • Nearly one third of Indians above 15 years are using some form of tobacco that leads to almost 40% of all the cancers.

  • The first Rafale combat aircraft would be inducted into the Indian Air Force’s ‘Golden Arrows’ 17 Squadron which was commanded by Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa during the Kargil war in 1999.
  • “The first unit to receive the Rafale combat aircraft would be the 17 Squadron which was earlier located in Bhatinda in Punjab and will now be shifted to Ambala in Haryana,”
  • The 17 Squadron used to operate the MiG-21s earlier and is ‘number-plated’ at the moment.

Godfather actor Carmine Caridi dies aged 85

  • Carmine Caridi, who was best known for his roles in two Godfather films, has died at the age of 85.
  • The actor died on Tuesday at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
  • Caridi first appeared in the Godfather franchise in 1974, when he played Carmine Rosato in The Godfather Part II.
  • He returned in 1990 as Albert Volpe in The Godfather Part III.

Assam: Noted artist Benu Mishra passes away aged 80 years

  • Renowned artist Benu Mishra passed away in Guwahati on Wednesday at the age of 80.
  • His mortal remains were cremated with State honours at Nabagraha Crematorium in Guwahati later in the day.
  • Mishra was the founder president of Guwahati Artists’ Guild (formed in 1976) which is one of the most important platforms for aspiring artists in the State
