Trump declares a national emergency over IT threats

  • US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency to protect American computer networks from foreign adversaries.
  • Trump signed an executive order which effectively bars US companies from using foreign telecoms believed to pose a security risk to the country.
  • Several countries (including the US) have raised concerns that the company’s products could be used by China for surveillance.

Aarohi: 1st woman to fly solo across Atlantic

  • Aarohi Pandit has become the world’s first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA).
  • She completed the feat when she landed at Iqaluit Airport in Canada on 13 May, having flown there from Wick in the UK.
  • It also made Pandit the first female pilot in the world to successfully complete a solo flight across the Greenland ice cap in an LSA.

Global oil prices jump over 1%

  • Oil prices rose after Saudi Arabia said explosive-laden drones had attacked two pumping stations belonging to state oil company Aramco.
  • Brent crude futures were at $70.79 a barrel at 1035 GMT.
  • Aramco had halted pumping on the East-West pipeline until the damage was evaluated.

China to Host 2023 Asian Cup Football Tournament

  • China has become the sole contender to host Asian Cup Football tournament in 2023 after South Korea has announced to withdraw its bid to host the game.
  • The Korea Football Association (KFA) announced that it had pulled out to strategically focus on a joint bid with North Korea to host the Women’s World Cup in the same year.

Sanjiv Puri Appointed ITC’s New Chairman

  • ITC Managing Director Sanjiv Puri has been appointed as the chairman by the Board of Directors.
  • His new designation will now be chairman and managing director.
  • He has been the Managing Director since 2018.
  • He was appointed on the board in December 2015 and as the CEO in February 2017.
  • He is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and the Wharton School of Business.
  • He joined the ITC in 1986.

16th May: National Dengue Day

  • The Government of India (GoI) has declared 16th May as National Dengue Day to mark the toll from the deadly disease ‘Dengue’ (transmitted by the bite of Aedes mosquito).
  • The day has been taking in terms of lives and to reaffirm nationwide efforts to tackle the scourge by using both education and medical intervention.
  • Dengue is a viral disease which includes symptoms such as high-grade fever 2 to 7 days and headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash.

Fully recyclable plastic created

  • The scientists have created a next-generation plastic that can be fully recycled into new materials of any colour, shape, or form, without loss of performance or quality.
  • A team of researchers at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has designed it.
  • All plastics are made up of large molecules called polymers, which are composed of monomers.

Major General AK Dhingra appointed as the first head of India’s first tri-services Special Operations Division

  • Major General AK Dhingra has been appointed as the first head of India’s first tri-services Special Operations Division.
  • It comprises of commandos from all three services (Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force).
  • The Armed Forces Special Operations Division has been set up by the government to undertake joint operations by three services.
  • It will have elements from the Army’s Parachute Regiments SF, Marine Commandos (MARCOS) of the Navy and the Garud Commandos of the Indian Air Force.

Kami Rita creates a world record by scaling Mt. Everest for the 23rd time

  • Veteran Nepali sherpa Kami Rita (49-years) scaled Mount Everest for the 23rd time.
  • He broke his own record of the most successful ascents of the world’s highest peak.
  • The Sherpa climber first scaled the Mount Everest on 13th May 1994.
  • He has already climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 m including K2, Cho-Oyu, Lhoste, and Annapurna among others.

MoU signed for plantation of Rudraksha Trees in Uttarakhand

  • As a part of CSR initiative under the Namami Gange Programme, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU was signed between National Mission for Clean Ganga, HCL Foundation and INTACH for taking up a project of Plantation of Rudraksha Trees in Uttarakhand
  • The project aims at planting 10 thousand Rudraksha trees in the catchment area of river Ganga in Uttarakhand in association with the local community and other stakeholders.
  • It will also help in generating income for people residing in those areas.
  • Namami Gange Mission aims at providing comprehensive and sustainable solutions for a cleaner ecosystem along the stretch of 97 towns and over 4 thousand 4 hundred villages on the Ganga stem.

India Signs ‘Christchurch Call to Action’

  • India signed the ‘Christchurch Call to Action’ in Paris.
  • The agreement came in the backdrop of the attacks on mosques in March and is aimed at stopping the abuse of the Internet by extremists.
  • The meeting held in Paris was attended by representatives of online giants like Microsoft, Google, Twitter, Facebook, and Amazon.
  • India was represented by Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
