The US approves dengue vaccine Dengvaxia

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced to approve the first vaccine for dengue, ‘Dengvaxia’.
  • FDA has also placed significant restrictions on its use because the vaccine has been shown to put some people at heightened risk.
  • Dengvaxia is produced by the French pharmaceutical firm Sanofi Pasteur.
  • It can be only given to the people aged 9 to 16 who live in areas where dengue is endemic and who are shown by lab testing already to have been infected with the disease.

Hinduja brothers named UK’s wealthiest people

  • The billionaire Hinduja brothers have been named as the wealthiest people in the UK for a third time, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.
  • Sri and Gopi Hinduja saw their fortune increase by 1.356 billion pounds ($1.7 billion) in the last year to 22 billion pounds.
  • The Hinduja Group was founded in Mumbai in 1914.

  • Former Croatia international and manager Igor Stimac will be appointed as the Indian men’s team coach after the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) technical committee recommended him for the post.
  • The committee, headed by Shyam Thapa, interviewed the four candidates for the post- Stimac, Albert Roca, Hakan Ericson, and Lee and zeroed in on Stimac.

  • Nigerian Professor Tijjani Mohammad Bande has been appointed as the new President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • His appointment was announced by María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, outgoing president of UNGA at a press conference in Abuja.
  • Bande is the permanent representative of Nigeria to the UN.
  • He holds an M.A in Political Science from the Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA (in 1981) and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto, Canada (in 1987).
  • He was the Vice-Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, between 2004 and 2009.
