EC to raise random sampling of EVMs

  • The Supreme Court ordered the Election Commission to increase random sampling of EVMs using VVPAT from the current one EVM per assembly segment to 5.
  • The order came on a plea filed by 21 Opposition parties that have sought directions to the poll body to randomly verify at least 50% of electronic voting machines (EVMs) using voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips.

  • Chinese badminton ace Lin Dan clinched the Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur on 7 April 2019.
  • After an electric performance, he beat countryman Chen Long 9-21, 21-7, 21-11.
  • The title is Lin’s first win this year, and also his first major success since taking the Malaysia Open in 2017.

Usha Padhee: CMD of Pawan Hans

  • Usha Padhee, joint secretary in the civil aviation ministry, has been given additional charge of the post of CMD of the disinvestment-bound Pawan Hans Limited.
  • She is the first woman CMD of the company.
  • The government, in 2018, initiated the disinvestment process in the company, in which it holds 51% stake and the ONGC 49%, and was looking to complete the process by March 2019.

World Health Day: 7 April

  • World Health Day is observed every year on 7 April under the sponsorship of WHO.
  • The theme for World Health Day 2019 is ‘Universal Coverage: Everyone, everywhere’ to ensure that no human being will ever have to make a choice between the two.
  • The day celebrates the establishment of the WHO and this year it marks the end of the World Health Organization’s 70th-anniversary celebrations.

INS Shakti to take part in Chinese celebration

  • Two Indian naval ships INS ‘Kolkata’ and ‘Shakti’ would take part in the Chinese Navy’s 70th anniversary of celebrations later in April 2019.
  • The two ships are scheduled to visit Chinese port of Qingdao from 21 to 26 April to participate in an International Fleet Review to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy.

  • The Meteorological Department issued a yellow weather warning for rain in Himachal Pradesh.
  • The weather department forecast thunderstorm with hail in isolated places of mid hills, including Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Solan, and Sirmaur.
  • Yellow is the least dangerous of the weather warnings – it indicates the possibility of severe weather over the next few days that could affect people.

  • 14 days, 11 bikes and 1 dream expedition, the expedition from Leh to KK Pass will cover over 1,000 km and is likely to qualify for inclusion in the record books.
