UGC prohibits imparting distance degree programmes in agriculture

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) has prohibited imparting distance degree programmes in agriculture.
  • The decision was taken by the higher education regulator.
  • A degree programme in agriculture is technical in nature as it requires practical or laboratory courses.
  • The Union agriculture ministry had referred the matter to the commission.
  • However, no new enrolments will be permitted from the 2019 academic session.
  • As per UGC Open and Distance Learning Regulations, 2017, professional programmes (like medicine, engineering, architecture, nursing, dental, pharmacy and physiotherapy) are not permitted to be offered in distance mode.

  • According to Electoral Commission of the Indian Ocean archipelago, Comoros President Azali Assoumani was re-elected.
  • Azali (first took office in 2016) was way ahead of his closest rival Mahamoudou Ahamada, who garnered only 14.62% of the ballots cast.
  • Comoros is a volcanic archipelago off Africa’s east coast, in the warm Indian Ocean waters of the Mozambique Channel.

  • European Parliament European Parliament adopted controversial copyright reforms championed by news publishers and the media business.
  • Under the reform, European law for the first time would hold platforms legally responsible for enforcing copyright, requiring them to check everything that their users post to prevent infringement.
  • After intense debate by Members of European Parliament (MEPs) meeting in Strasbourg, passed the draft law with 348 votes in favour, 274 against, and 36 abstentions.
  • The reform was loudly backed by media companies and artists, who want to obtain a better return from web platforms that allow users to distribute their content.

Shares can be transferred in only demat

  • Transfer of shares of listed companies can be done only in the demat form from 1 April 2019, as said by SEBI on 27 March 2019.
  • Shares in the demat form would help in maintaining a transparent record of shareholding at companies amid rising concerns over beneficial ownership of entities.
  • The move does not prohibit an investor from holding the shares in physical form even after April 1.

Breakdancing to be added to Olympic 2024

  • The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended adding breakdancing, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
  • The addition of these 4 sports to the Paris medal program offers the opportunity to connect with the young generation.
  • All 4 sports will be assessed in terms of how they are managed, the integrity of competitions and judging.

Veselin Matic Set to Be India’s Basketball Coach

  • Veselin Matic, who took Iran to an Asian Games bronze medal in 2010, is set to be appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s basketball team.
  • The Serbian’s name had been cleared by the sports ministry.
  • A veteran international coach, Matic helped Iran qualify for its first ever World Championship (2010) with victory in the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship.

BCCI Ombudsman Justice D.K. Jain to Serve as Ad-Hoc Ethics Officer

  • Supreme Court-appointed BCCI Ombudsman Justice D K Jain (retd) will now serve as the Ethics Officer of the Indian cricket board on an ad-hoc basis.
  • According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), provisions in its constitution require an Ethics Officer to be appointed to determine and decide issues related to conflict of interest.

Goa: Dipak Pauskar sworn in as Cabinet Minister

  • In Goa, Dipak Pauskar was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister by Governor Mridula Sinha at the Raj Bhavan in Dona Paula.
  • Pauskar replaces deputy Chief Minister Sudin Dhavalikar (Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party) in the Council of Ministers.
  • As two of the three MGP MLAs, Manohar Ajgaonkar and Pauskar merged their party’s legislative wing with the BJP, thereby isolating Mr Dhavalikar as the lone MGP legislator in the house.
  • The merger had increased BJP’s strength from 12 to 14 in the 40-member Assembly.
  • Mr Ajgaonkar is already a member of the state cabinet.

MA Hampiholi: Assumed charge as the new DGNO

  • Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, AVSM NM assumed charge as Director General Naval Operations on 27 March 2019.
  • He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy on 01 July 1985.
  • He is a recipient of the Nao Sena Medal in 2011 and the Athi Vishist Seva Medal in 2019.

India, US inked pact

  • India and the US signed an agreement for exchange of country-by-country (CbC) report, a move that is expected to give huge relief to subsidiaries of US-headquartered companies in taxation-related matter.
  • The agreement was signed by PC Mody, Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), and Kenneth I Juster, US Ambassador to India.

India-African Union sign MoU on strengthening cooperation in the healthcare sector

  • An agreement has been signed between India and the African Union to establish an India-Africa health sciences collaborative platform.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that the MoU will pave the way for cooperation in research and development, capacity building, health services, pharmaceutical trade and manufacturing capabilities for drugs and diagnostics.
  • The statement said, to carry forward the vision of a structured and concrete partnership in the health sector, the MEA partnered with Indian Council of Medical Research and had jointly organised the first India-Africa Health Sciences Meet in 2016 in New Delhi.
