Artificial Intelligence, Yoga to be part of the CBSE curriculum for 2019-20 session

  • The CBSE is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI), Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE), and Yoga as skill subjects in the school curriculum for the upcoming academic session.
  • A decision to introduce the three subjects was taken at a recent meeting of the board’s governing body.
  • The CBSE is introducing artificial intelligence as an optional 6th subject at Class IX from the session 2019-2020 onwards.
  • The board has also decided to introduce yoga and early childhood education as elective subjects at the senior secondary level.

PM Modi Addresses the Nation: India Becomes Elite Space Power

  • PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation. PM Modi announced that India has entered its name as an elite space power.
  • An Anti-Satellite Weapon (A-SAT) successfully targeted a live satellite on a low earth orbit. The name of this mission was ‘Mission Shakti’.
  • After the US, Russia, and China, India is the fourth country to acquire this space capability.
  • It was a difficult target to achieve which was completed successfully within three minutes of launch.
  • This achievement does not violate any international law. Anti-satellite is a milestone for the country’s security and technological achievement. India is a space superpower now.

World’s largest e-waste recycling facility opens in Dubai

  • The world’s largest e-waste recycling plant has been opened in Dubai Industrial Park, Dubai by ‘Enviroserve’ company with a total cost of USD 5 million.
  • It will recycle Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), IT asset disposition (ITAD), refrigerant gas and specialized waste.
  • The processing capacity of this recycling hub is 100,000 tonnes of total integrated waste (per year), of which 39,000 tonnes is e-waste.
  • The facility can process the entire range of WEEE from consumer and industrial to commercial and military.
  • The project is supported by the Swiss Government Export Finance Agency.

Sharada Corridor plan approved by Pakistan

  • The Pakistan government approved a proposal to establish a corridor that will allow Hindu pilgrims from India to visit Sharada Peeth.
  • It is an ancient Hindu temple and cultural site in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir (PcK).
  • Established in 237 BC during the reign of Ashoka, the Sharada Peeth is 5000 years old.

ITC sold John Players to Reliance

  • ITC has sold its John Players apparel brand and related trademarks and intellectual property to Reliance Retail.
  • Launched about 2002, the apparel brand started with men’s shirts and was later extended to jeans, tees, and trousers.
  • ITC will now focus on the premium-end through its WLS stores.

Manu and Saurabh bagged gold medal

  • Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary bagged a Gold medal in the 10 m Air Pistol Mixed team event at the 12th Asian Airgun Championship at Taoyuan in Taipei.
  • The teenage Indian duo went on to win the five-team final with a score of 484.8 points.
  • The duo won the ISSF World Cup stage gold at the same event in Delhi in February 2019.

President Kovind Honoured with Croatia’s Highest Award

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has been awarded the Grand Order of King Tomislav with Sash and Grand Star by the President of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic for his exceptional contribution to the advancement of overall relations and development of mutual cooperation between India and Croatia and for promoting friendship and partnership between the people of both the countries.
  • This is the highest award of the Republic of Croatia.
  • Mr Kovind was in Croatian capital Zagreb on the first leg of his three-nation tour to Croatia, Bolivia and Chile.

Special observers appointed by ECI

  • Election Commission of India appointed K K Sharma as Special Central Police Observer for the States of West Bengal and Jharkhand.
  • ECI appointed Sh Mrinal Kanti Das (IPS 1977 Retd DGP Manipur) as Special Central Police Observer for States of Tripura and Mizoram.
  • These Observers would oversee the deployment and other security-related issues in the States.

INS Kadmatt to participate in maritime and aerospace exhibition in Malaysia

  • Indian Navy’s frontline corvette INS Kadmatt reached Malaysian archipelago Langkawi.
  • It will participate in the 15th edition of Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, LIMA-19.
  • INS Kadmatt is an indigenous stealth anti-submarine warfare corvette and was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January 2016.
  • The ship is fitted with state-of-the-art weapons, sensors and machinery.

  • Scott Walker, one of the most innovative and enduring songwriters of the 20th century, has died aged 76.

  • Celebrated Malayalam writer and poet Ashita passed away at the age of 63 in Thrissur, after fighting a long battle with cancer.
  • She was the recipient of myriad awards, and some include the Padmarajan Award – Thathagatha (2000), Lalithambika Antharjanam Award (1994) and Edaserri Award (1986).

India’s carbon dioxide emissions up by 5%

  • India emitted 2,299 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2018, a 4.8% rise from 2017, according to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
  • India’s emissions growth was higher than that of the United States and China, primarily due to a rise in coal consumption.
  • China, the United States, and India together accounted for nearly 70% of the rise in energy demand.
