President promulgated 4 Ordinances

  • President Ram Nath Kovind promulgated 4 Ordinances on 21 Feb 2019.
  • The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Second Ordinance is one of those, declares the practice of instant triple talaq to be void and illegal.
  • It will also make the offence punishable with imprisonment up to three years and fine.

CCEA Approves KUSUM Scheme for Farmers’ Welfare

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the launch of ‘Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan’ (KUSUM Yojana) with the objective of providing financial and water security to farmers.
  • The Central Government will provide a total financial support of Rs 34,422 crore for the scheme.

Trump signs order to establish US space force

  • US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to establish its Space Force as a new armed service within the Department of Air Force.
  • The Space Force will include both combat and combat support functions to enable prompt and sustained offensive and defensive space operations in all domains.
  • The force will be organized, trained, and equipped to meet and protect the US national interests in the space, consistent with international laws.
  • It will organize and train the next generation of warriors to deter aggression and defend the United States.

China’s Xinhua Unveils World’s First Female AI News Anchor

  • Chinese news agency Xinhua unveiled the world’s first female AI news anchor Xin Xiaomeng.
  • She has been developed in collaboration with Sogou Inc, a search engine company.
  • Earlier, Xinhua also developed Qiu Hao, the world’s first male AI news anchor at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen held in November 2018, who is capable of mimicking human facial expressions and mannerisms while reading out news-reports.

PM Modi receives the Seoul Peace Prize in South Korea

  • Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the prestigious Seoul Peace Prize – 2018 for his contribution to international cooperation and fostering global economic growth.
  • The award was presented to him by the Seoul Peace Prize Foundation at a grand ceremony in Seoul.
  • PM Modi gives the prize money of Seoul Peace Prize USD 200,000 to Namami Gange fund.
  • Earlier, PM Narendra Modi paid tributes to Korean soldiers at the National Cemetery.
  • Seven documents signed between India and South Korea at the bilateral meeting including on cooperation in media, start-ups and police among others.

Lt Gen Ravi: 3rd member of CoA

  • The Supreme Court appointed Lieutenant General Ravi Thodge as the 3rd member of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) for BCCI.
  • In 2017, the apex court had appointed a 4-member CoA, headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Vinod Rai.
  • The other 3 members of the CoA were — former Indian women cricket captain Diana Edulji, Ramachandra Guha and Vikram Limaye.

  • Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India has been selected as the president of the Foundation Board for Better Boxing of AIBA (International Boxing Association).
  • He has been elected to the post for a tenure of 4 years.
  • AIBA formed the Foundation Board for Better Boxing in the last meeting of its Executive Committee to formulate an action plan for global development of the sport in future.

ATL Drone Module released

  • The ‘ATL Drone module: Get, Set, go’ for Atal Tinkering Labs was launched at the ongoing Aero India 2019 in Bengaluru.
  • It was launched by NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and Drona Aviation, an IIT Bombay start-up.
  • With the ATL Drone Module, young students of India will learn how to create their own drones and use them for solving community problems in India.

Defence Ministry Apparoves Torpedo Acquisition for Naval Submarines

  • In a major boost for the Navy’s firepower, the Defence Ministry has approved the acquisition of more than 100 heavyweight torpedoes which will be equipped on the force’s six Scorpene-class submarines being built at Mazagon Dockyards in Mumbai.
  • The French-origin Scorpene submarines are being built in India at Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and have now been named the Kalvari class.
  • The first boat of the class called INS Kalvari has already been inducted into the Navy and is carrying out operational duties.

  • The world’s largest bee, Flying Bulldog, was rediscovered in a remote part of Indonesia in its first sighting in nearly 40 years on 21 February 2019.
  • It was discovered in the 19th century by British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace and nicknamed the ‘flying bulldog’.
  • The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species has listed the bee as vulnerable.
