Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan Implemented in India

  • Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) was rolled out by the Ministry of Labour and Employment from 15 February 2019.
  • The scheme announced in the Interim Budget was notified by the Ministry recently.
  • As many as 42 crore workers are estimated to be engaged in the unorganized sector of the country.

India Withdraws Most Favoured Nation Status to Pakistan

  • Following the attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pulwama that left 44 CRPF personnel dead, India has withdrawn the MFN (Most Favoured Nation) status that it had granted to Pakistan.
  • The decision was taken during the Cabinet Committee on Security meeting held in New Delhi. India had granted the status to Pakistan in 1996, a year after WTO’s formation.

CCEA approves CLCS-TUS with a total outlay of Rs. 2900 crore

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Credit Linked Capital Subsidy and Technology Up-gradation Scheme (CLCS-TUS) with a total outlay of 2900 crore rupees.
  • The objective of the scheme is to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs by integrating various ongoing schematic interventions aimed at up-grading technology through the Credit Linked Capital Subsidy (CLCS).
  • The scheme will facilitate technology up-gradation improvement in Quality of products by MSMEs, enhancement in productivity, reduction in waste.

B P Sharma: CMD Pawan Hans

  • B P Sharma was re-employed as the CMD of the state-run helicopter manufacturer Pawan Hans.
  • He was the CMD of Pawan Hans earlier in March 2015.
  • He will be serving for a period of 5 months.
  • Pawan Hans has a fleet of more than 50 helicopters.

NASA Announces the End of Opportunity

  • NASA announced that its Opportunity Rover mission is complete after the rover failed to respond despite repeated trials since August 2018.
  • The space agency inferred that a planet-encircling dust storm cut off communications with Opportunity on June 10, 2018, disabling its solar panels from storing power.
  • Since then NASA has beamed over 830 unanswered rescue commands.
  • The robotic rover, which wandered the surface of the red planet for over 15 years, was launched by NASA in July 2003 as a part of its Mars Exploration Rover program.
  • It is survived by NASA’s Curiosity rover, which is now the only active robot on Mars.

India Signed Deal with US to Procure 72,400 Assault Rifles

  • The Indian Government has signed a deal with the US under Fast Track Procurement (FTP) to avail the Indian Army with 72,400 new ‘Sig Sauer Assault Rifles’ which will overhaul the army’s inventory of frontline rifles.
  • These Sig Sauer Assault rifles are 7.62*51 mm which are compact, robust, advance in technology and easy to maintain in field conditions.
  • These new rifles will come at a cost of around Rs. 700 Crore and will be used by the army troops deployed along the 3,600 km China’s border.

IAF gets its first woman flight engineer

  • Flight Lieutenant Hina Jaiswal became the first woman flight engineer.
  • She was commissioned in January 2015 to the IAF’s engineering branch.
  • She created history when she was chosen as the first woman candidate to pursue the elite course.
  • A flight engineer is a member of an aircraft’s flight crew and requires special skills for constantly monitoring and operating its complex systems.

44 CRPF personnel martyred in a suicide attack in Kashmir

  • India lost 44 of its bravest Jawans of CRPF (country’s largest paramilitary force) in an absolutely abhorrent, cowardly attack in Awantipora, Pulwama in Kashmir.
  • This after a Jaish dastard rammed a vehicle carrying explosives weighing 350 kgs into a CRPF truck.

Chemistry Nobel Prize winner Manfred Eigen passes away

  • Nobel Prize winner German scientist Manfred Eigen (91-years) passed away.
  • Eigen shared the 1967 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on extremely fast chemical reactions.
  • In 1971, he founded Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Germany.
  • He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Institute of Human Virology in the US in 2005.

Former Afghan interim President Mojaddedi passes away

  • Former Afghan interim President Sibghatullah Mojaddedi (93-years) passed away in Kabul hospital after a long illness.
  • He played many roles in Afghan politics.
  • Mojaddedi fought the Soviets and rose to become the country’s interim President (for two months) after the collapse of the Afghan communist regime in 1992.
  • In 2003, he served as chairman of the Loya Jirga (or Grand Assembly) that approved the Constitution for a post-Taliban era.

NKAFC inaugurated at Dharwad

  • “North Karnataka Agromet Forecasting and Research Centre (NKAFC)”, Dharwad was inaugurated on 14 Feb 2019.
  • It will act as a center of excellence having multi-functions like observations, forecast, and research in Agro-Meteorological services in Karnataka.
  • 12 District Agro-meteorological Units (DAMUs) will be established in Karnataka by March 2019.
