PM Dedicates Kollam Bypass in Kerala to Nation

  • PM Narendra Modi has dedicated the Kollam Bypass on the National Highway-66 to the nation.
  • It reduces travel time between Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Notably, this is the first National Highway project in the country taken up on a 50:50 Centre-State partnership.
  • He also launched development projects worth over Rs 1,500 cr in Odisha.
  • The 13-kilometer-long two-lane bypass is constructed at a cost of 352 crore rupees.
  • It has three major bridges over the Ashtamudi lake, having a total length of 1540 metres and an underpass.

UK PM Theresa May wins the no-confidence vote

  • British Prime Minister Theresa May has won a confidence vote by 325 votes to 306 – a majority of 19, averting a general election.

  • The world’s first television channel dedicated to human rights was launched in London on 16 January 2019.
  • The channel was launched by the International Observatory of Human Rights (IOHR).
  • The web-based channel would bring human rights issues to audiences in over 20 countries across Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

Vinesh Phogat Becomes First Indian Athlete to Be Nominated In Laureus World Comeback of Year Award

  • Ace Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has become the first Indian athlete to receive a nomination in the prestigious Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award.
  • She has been nominated alongside US Tour Championship winner Tiger Woods, who won his first tournament in five years.
  • The 24-year-old Vinesh from Haryana made a sensational comeback after battling a long injury lay-off to win a gold medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and Jakarta Asian Games.

Yohei Sasakawa to get Gandhi Peace Prize for 2018

  • The Union government has announced the names of the winners of the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2015-2018.
  • The Gandhi Peace Prize 2018 will be given to Yohei Sasakawa, Goodwill Ambassador of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for Leprosy Elimination.
  • For 2017, the award is given to Ekai Abhiyan Trust for their contribution to education for rural and tribal children
  • For 2016, the award has been jointly given to Akshaya Patra Foundation for providing mid-day meals to children across the country and Sulabh International for its work towards the emancipation of manual scavengers.

Sanjay Jain & K M Nataraj appointed as ASGs

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed senior advocates Sanjay Jain and K M Nataraj as Additional Solicitor Generals (ASG) of India for the Supreme Court.
  • Earlier in April 2015, Nataraj was appointed as ASG for southern zone.
  • Sanjay Jain was appointed as ASG for the Delhi High Court in 2014.
  • Sanjay Jain will hold the post of ASG till 30 June 2020.

ISRO to launch Kalamsat & Microsat satellite

  • ISRO will launch a student satellite called ‘Kalamsat’ and an imaging satellite known as ‘Microsat-R’ on 24 January 2019.
  • Both the satellite will be carried by ‘PSLV C-44’ rocket.
  • PSLV is a four-stage launch vehicle.
  • In PSLV-C44, the fourth stage (PS4) of the vehicle would be moved to a ​higher circular orbit so as to establish an orbital platform for carrying out experiments.

Malayalam Director Lenin Rajendran passes away

  • Noted Malayalam director & screenwriter Lenin Rajendran (67-years) passed away at a private hospital in Chennai.
  • He was a five-time recipient of the Kerala State Film Awards and also received the International Federation of Film Critics Award for the best Malayalam film for his film ‘Makaramanju’.
  • He was also chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation.

C P Joshi elected as Rajasthan assembly speaker

  • Senior Congress leader C.P. Joshi (68-years) elected as speaker of the 15th Rajasthan Assembly.
  • Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh administered the oath of office.
  • Joshi has been elected from the Nathdwara assembly constituency.

India’s Satyarup becomes world’s youngest mountaineer to climb 7 peaks, 7 volcano summits

  • Mountaineer Satyarup Siddhanta conquered Antartica’s highest point, Mount Sidley.
  • With this feat, he became the first Indian and youngest man (35 years and 262 days) to climb the seven highest peaks and volcanic summits across all continents.
  • Australia’s Daniel Bull had done it at the age of 36 years 157 days.
  • According to the in-Reach Satellite, Communicator Satyarup was carrying, he summited Mount Sidley at a temperature of minus 40-degree Celsius.
  • Earlier, Satyarup had scaled the highest volcanic peak in North America, Pico de Orizaba.

SBI, other banks to finance Samruddhi Corridor

  • A consortium of banks led by State Bank of India has agreed to provide finance for Nagpur-Mumbai ‘Samruddhi Corridor’ expressway project.
  • Other lenders include Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of Maharashtra as well as the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India.
  • SBI has agreed to lend the highest amount, 8,500 crore rupees.

MoU b/w India and Australia approved

  • On 16 January 2019, the Union Cabinet gave its approval for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) and the Safety in Mines, Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS), Australia.
  • The MoU will help in the implementation of a risk-based safety management system in mines.
  • It will also help in modernising R&D laboratory of DGMS.
