Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) in Jharsuguda to be dedicated to the Nation

  • The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated to the Nation Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), at Jharsuguda in Odisha.
  • The Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Jharsuguda is built at a cost of Rs 100 Crores.
  • PM Modi also inaugurated a new railway line from Balangir-Bichupali built at an estimated cost of Rs. 115 crores.
  • It will facilitate EXIM and Domestic cargo including Private Freight Traffic.
  • The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Kendriya Vidyalaya in Odisha’s Sonepur at an estimated cost of Rs.15.81 crore.

Cabinet approves capital infusion in Exim Bank

  • On 16 January 2019, the Union Cabinet approved fund infusion of Rs 500 crore in Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank).
  • The infusion would help the EXIM bank in expanding its business.
  • The government had infused Rs 500 crore in Exim Bank last financial year.
  • David Rasquinha is the Managing Director of EXIM Bank.

RBI will purchase govt. securities on 17 Jan

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will inject 10,000 crore rupees into the banking system through the purchase of government securities on 17 January 2019 to increase liquidity.
  • The purchase will be made through Open Market Operations (OMOs).
  • OMO refer to the buying and selling of government securities in the open market in order to increase or decrease the amount of money in the banking system.

Chennai’s Gukesh Crowned India’s Youngest Grandmaster

  • Tamil Nadu lad D Gukesh became the 2nd youngest Grand Master in the world and the youngest Indian to achieve the feat at 12 years, 7 months and 17 days, erasing the mark set by his state-mate R Praggnanandhaa in June 2018.
  • Gukesh becomes India’s 59th Grand Master. Ukraine’s Sergey Karjakin remains the youngest-ever GM, having achieved the feat at the age of 12 years and 7 months in 2002.

Yu Wensheng wins human rights award

  • Chinese lawyer Yu Wensheng won the ‘Franco-German Human Rights’ award on 14 January 2019.
  • Yu Wensheng is best known for suing the Beijing government over the city’s once chronic pollution.
  • He was detained by China in January 2018.
  • He was among 15 winners of the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law for 2018, announced in November 2018.

Jaideep Govind appointed Secretary General of NHRC

  • Senior IAS officer Jaideep Govind (1984-batch, Madhya Pradesh cadre) has been appointed the Secretary-General (15th) of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
  • Earlier, he was posted as Special Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Ministries of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation.

Manu Sawhney appointed as CEO of ICC

  • Manu Sawhney was appointed as Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on 15 January 2019.
  • He will formally take over from David Richardson after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in July 2019.
  • He is the former CEO of Singapore Sports Hub and Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports.
  • He is also a non-executive director and member of the Audit Committee of Manchester United Ltd.

India’s 1st CWG Boxing Gold-Medallist Mohammed Ali Qamar Appointed Women’s Team Coach

  • Mohammed Ali Qamar, the man who won India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in boxing, has taken over as the chief coach for the country’s female boxers.
  • He has replaced veteran Shiv Singh. Qamar, who is set to turn 38, is also the youngest person to land the job.
  • Qamar’s CWG gold came in the 2002 Manchester edition in the light flyweight category.

  • Veteran journalist Rajendra Prabhu passed away on 15 January 2019.
  • He played a key role in the formation of the National Union of Journalists (India) in 1972.
  • He also played a key role in ensuring fair wages and benefits to journalists.

Puducherry to ban single-use plastic from 1st March

  • Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy has announced to ban the production, sale and use of single-use plastic products in the Union Territory from 1st March 2019.
  • The government wants to gift a plastic-free Puducherry to the future generation and curb the plastic in the larger interest of the environment.

MP launches Rs 50,000-cr farm debt-waiver scheme

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has launched the Rs 50,000-crore farm debt-waiver scheme named ‘Jai Kisan Rin Mukti Yojana’.
  • It would benefit 55 lakh small and marginal farmers.
  • About 70% people of Madhya Pradesh are associated with agriculture and allied sectors.
  • Farmers who have registered themselves to pay GST and are paying income tax, cannot avail benefits under this scheme.
