Aadhaar-driving licence linking to be made mandatory: Prasad

  • Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday said that the government will soon make it mandatory to link Aadhaar with driving licence.
  • He added that currently, a guilty person who causes an accident flees the scene and gets a duplicate licence, helping him go scot-free. Prasad said with linkage of Aadhaar-driving licence, the guilty cannot change his/her biometrics and fingerprints.

Come 20 mins before departure: Railways plans airport-like security

  • Railways is planning to seal stations like airports and passengers would require to arrive 15-20 minutes before their train’s scheduled departure to complete the security check process.
  • The hi-tech security plan has been implemented in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj and Karnataka’s Hubli stations.
  • Railways plans to implement the process at 202 more stations, Railway Protection Force Director General Arun Kumar said.

Orthodox Church of Ukraine granted independence from Russian Orthodox Church

  • The recently formed Orthodox Church of Ukraine has been granted independence, marking a historic split from the Russian Church.
  • Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew – the head of the global Orthodox Church – has signed a document in Istanbul, Turkey, to that effect.
  • Ukraine’s churches have for centuries been under the authority of the leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow.
  • The Patriarch has signed what is known as a “tomos”, a decree officially recognising an independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church, in the presence of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
  • Istanbul remained the centre of the Orthodox Church after the Muslim Ottoman Turks occupied the city, and then known as Constantinople, in the 15th Century.

Pakistan abolishes visa on arrival for Afghans

  • Pakistan abolished the long-standing facility of visa on arrival for Afghan nationals.
  • The Immigration Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency cited increased security risks from the western border as a reason for the move.
  • Earlier, Afghan nationals were granted a 30-day visa on arrival at the entry points but now they will be required to apply for a visa from Pakistani missions in Afghanistan.
  • The move to restrict Afghans came as Pakistan has already decided to issue ‘on-arrival’ visas to citizens of 24 other countries to increase tourism and investments.

FSSAI asks food businesses to comply with new packaging norms by 1st July

  • According to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), The food businesses need to comply with new packaging regulations that bar use of recycled plastics and newspapers to wrap food articles by 1st July 2019.
  • The new packaging regulations would raise the bar of food safety in India to the next level.
  • The new regulations prohibit packaging material made of recycled plastics including carrying bags for packaging, storing, carrying or dispensing articles of food.

Dinu conferred with lifetime achievement award

  • Veteran journalist Dinu Randive was conferred with the lifetime achievement award by the Mantralaya and Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh.
  • The Sangh is an association of journalists covering Maharashtra legislature and secretariat.
  • Randive started his journalistic career in 1956.
  • He also participated in the freedom struggle, the Sanyukta Maharashtra movement, and the Goa liberation movement.

Former U.S. Defence Secretary Harold Brown dies at 91

  • Harold Brown, who as United States defence secretary in the Carter administration championed cutting-edge fighting technology, has died at age 91.
  • Brown was a nuclear physicist who led the Pentagon to modernize its defence systems with weapons that included precision-guided cruise missiles, stealth aircraft, advanced satellite surveillance and improved communications and intelligence systems.
  • He successfully campaigned to increase the Pentagon budget during his term, despite scepticism inside the White House and from Democrats in Congress.
  • Brown was born in New York City on Sept. 19, 1927, attended public schools and went to Columbia University on an accelerated wartime schedule, receiving an undergraduate degree in physics in 1945 and also went to graduate school at Columbia, receiving a doctorate in physics.

  • The government of India issued an ‘Orange’ alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands due Cyclonic storm ‘Pabuk’ on 6 January 2019.
  • ‘Pabuk’ is now over the Andaman sea and its neighbourhood.
  • An ‘orange’ weather warning means people should be prepared and there is an increased likelihood of bad or extreme weather which may disrupt road and air travel and threaten life and property.

UBI & Srei Equipment Finance signed a pact

  • On 5 January 2019, United Bank of India and Srei Equipment Finance signed an agreement for financing the MSME and agriculture sectors.
  • Under the pact, UBI will leverage its low-cost loans with Srei to enable the purchase of equipment and vehicles in a seamless manner.
  • Ashok Kumar Pradhan is the United Bank of India’s MD and CEO.
