National Health Authority gets Cabinet nod

  • The Union Cabinet has cleared the constitution of a National Health Authority (NHA) through an executive order, thus taking the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) out of the ambit of the Ministry of Health.
  • Now, the ministry’s role will be limited to acting as the nodal ministry for NHA in parliamentary matters, like the presentation of annual reports.
  • Earlier, all funds released by the National Health Agency, which is implementing the PM-JAY, were done through the Ministry of Health.
  • The NHA’s governing board will be chaired by the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, while its members will include NITI Aayog CEO and NHA CEO.

Parliament Passes National Council for Teacher Education (Amendment) Bill, 2018

  • The Indian Parliament passed the National Council for Teacher Education (Amendment) Bill, 2018, following the approval of the Rajya Sabha.
  • The Lok Sabha had already passed the Bill. The Bill seeks to amend the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Act, 1993.
  • The Bill was introduced by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar in Lok Sabha in December 2017.
  • The bill aims to grant retrospective recognition to Central and State institutions which had conducted teacher education courses without approval by the Council.
  • This will ensure that the future of about 17 thousand students having degrees from such institutions is secured.

Qatar will cease to be a member of OPEC

  • Qatar will cease to be a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
  • The country had sent an official notification to the OPEC expressing its wish to pull out and to focus on its liquefied natural gas production in December.
  • The decision came amid the ongoing diplomatic and economic blockade imposed on the country by its Persian Gulf neighbours and several Arab states.
  • These countries accuse Doha of supporting terrorism and interfering in their internal affairs. Qatar has strongly refuted these allegations.

Jayanta Kumar won ‘National Geospatial Award’

  • The Indian Society for Remote Sensing (ISRS) conferred the National Geospatial Award for Excellence-2017 (Life Time Achievement Award) to IIT professor Jayanta Kumar Ghosh
  • The award was given to him for his contribution to the development of geospatial science and applications.
  • ISRS is an organisation known in the area of space science, remote sensing and geospatial technology.

Justice Asif appointed as new CJ of Pakistan

  • Justice Asif Saeed Khosa was appointed as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan.
  • He is the senior most judge of Pakistan’s Supreme Court.
  • Justice Khosa will assume the charge of his office on 18 January 2019.
  • The incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar will be retiring from service on 17 January 2019.

P K Singh appointed CCI secretary

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) appointed Pramod Kumar Singh as its secretary.
  • Prior to this, PK Singh was adviser (law) to the CCI.
  • The secretary would act as the nodal officer for the Commission for making or receiving all statutory information and entering into the any formal relationships
  • The CCI was established in 2003 and draws its power from the Competition Act, 2002.

Saurabh Kumar is the new Chairman of OFB

  • Saurabh Kumar took over as the Director General of Ordnance Factories (DGOF) and Chairman of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in Kolkata.
  • He is a 1982-batch Indian Ordnance Factory Service officer.
  • He was involved in drafting the ‘Indian offset’ policy for defence purchases and the ‘Make’ procedure in the Defence Procurement Procedure of 2003-04.

  • Sachin Tendulkar’s childhood coach cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar (87-years) passed away due to age-related ailments in Mumbai.
  • Besides Tendulkar, he also coached some prominent players in Vinod Kambli, Pravin Amre, Sameer Dighe and Balwinder Singh Sandhu.
  • He was bestowed with country’s fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri (in 2010) and Dronacharya Award (for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games) in 1990.

  • Veteran Kannada actor C H Lokanath (91-years) passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru.
  • Lokanath was in the Kannada film industry for nearly six decades and was affectionately addressed as ‘Uncle Lokanath’ by his fans.
  • He had acted in over 600 movies and more than 1,000 plays.
  • His famous movies are Bhootayyana Maga Ayyu, Minchina Ota, Nagarahaavu, Nodi Swami Navidru Heege, Katha Sangama and Kittu Puttu.

Entire Nagaland declared ‘disturbed area’ under AFSPA

  • According to Home Ministry notification, Entire state of Nagaland has been declared ‘disturbed area’ for six (June-2019) more months, under the black law Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
  • AFSPA gives armed forces the power to maintain public order in “disturbed areas”.
  • They have the authority to prohibit a gathering of five or more persons in an area, can use force or even open fire after giving due warning if they feel a person is in contravention of the law

Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair declared as an authorized Immigration Check post

  • Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair has been declared as an authorized Immigration Check post for entry into/exit from India with valid travel documents for all classes of passengers.
  • This decision of the Union Government will open up the Port Blair Airport for direct international flight and immigration facilities.
  • For this purpose, the Superintendent of Police (CID), Andaman and Nicobar Police has been appointed as the ‘Civil Authority’ for the purpose of the immigration check post.
  • Efforts are being made for the early operation of international flights from the Airport and extending facilities of e-visa and visa on arrival.
