Aadhaar Amendment Bill introduced in Lok Sabha

  • On 2 January 2019, the government of India introduced the Aadhar amendment bill in Lok Sabha.
  • The bill seeks to provide legal backing for voluntary seeding of biometric Aadhaar ID with mobile numbers and bank accounts after the Supreme Court barred mandatory use of the Aadhar by private firms.
  • In December 2018, the Union Cabinet approved amending the existing Aadhaar law.

Jair Bolsonaro Takes Oath as New President of Brazil

  • Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as Brazil’s President in a ceremony at Brazil’s National Congress Building.
  • Bolsonaro is a former Army captain and admirer of the country’s 1964-1985 military dictatorship.
  • Bolsonaro, 63, was a seven-term fringe congressman who rode a wave of anti-establishment anger to became Brazil’s first far-right president since a military dictatorship gave way to civilian rule three decades ago.

France Introduced GAFA Tax on Global Internet, Technology Firm

  • The finance minister of France Bruno Le Maire announced that France will introduce its own tax on large internet and technology companies from January 1.
  • France has been pushing hard for a new so-called “GAFA tax” — named after Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon — to ensure the global giants pay a fair share of taxes on their massive business operations in Europe.

Loan subsidy for middle-income group extended till March 2020

  • According to Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri, The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) loan subsidy for the middle-income group has been extended till 31st March 2020.
  • Around one lakh beneficiaries have taken benefit of the scheme so far.
  • under PMAY, 68.7 lakh houses have been sanctioned, 37 lakh houses have been grounded and 13.5 lakh have been completed and handed over.
  • An investment of 3.85 lakh crore rupees has been envisaged under the mission.
  • More than 6 thousand 9 hundred crore rupees interest subsidy on housing loans has been disbursed to over 3.14 lakh beneficiaries of Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme CLSS under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

Cabinet Approves Merger of Vijaya Bank & Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda

  • The cabinet has approved the merger of Vijaya Bank & Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda.
  • After this merger, Bank of Baroda will become the third biggest public sector bank.
  • The merger will be effective from April 1.
  • This is also the first ever three-way merger in Indian banking.
  • Bank of Baroda (BoB) finalised the share swap ratio for the merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with itself.
  • As per the Scheme of Amalgamation, shareholders of Vijaya Bank will get 402 equity shares of BoB for every 1,000 shares held.
  • In case of Dena Bank, its shareholders will get 110 shares for every 1,000 shares of BoB.

RBI gives relief to MSME sector

  • The RBI allowed a one-time restructuring of existing debt of up to 25 crore rupees for the MSMEs which have defaulted on payment of loans.
  • The restructuring of loans will be implemented by 31 March 2020.
  • It will help the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) which are facing cash crunch due to demonetisation and GST implementation.

Hemant appointed as interim chairman of LIC

  • The government of India appointed Life Insurance Corporation’s (LIC) Managing Director Hemant Bhargava as the interim Chairman of LIC.
  • He replaced V K Sharma, who retired on 31 December 2018.
  • He was appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of LIC in February 2017.
  • The government has already initiated the process to select a regular Chairman and Managing Director of LIC.

Justice AK Sikri nominated as EC of NALSA

  • President Ram Nath Kovind nominated Justice AK Sikri as the Executive Chairman (EC) of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
  • The post got vacant after the retirement of Justice Madan B Lokur.
  • The NALSA was constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free legal services to the weaker sections of the society and to organise the Lok Adalats.

ISRO launches ‘Samwad with Students’

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched a new platform named ‘Samwad with Students’ (SwS) in Bengaluru on 1 January 2019.
  • Through the SwS initiative, ISRO aims to engage youngsters across India to capture their scientific temperament.
  • The first SwS event saw 40 students and 10 teachers from select schools who interacted with ISRO Chairman Dr. K Sivan.

Anti-Dumping duty imposed on chemical

  • The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended anti-dumping duty on a chemical used in paint and printing industries, imported from Brazil, Indonesia, and Thailand.
  • The name of the chemical is ‘non-plasticised industrial grade nitrocellulose damped in isopropyl alcohol having nitrogen content in the range of 10.7-12.2%’.
  • The duties have been imposed for three years.

  • Justice Cholendra Shamsher J B Rana took over as the new Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court on 2 January 2019.
  • President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath to Justice Rana.
  • He will have a tenure of four years.
  • He succeeded Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra, who retired on 1 January 2018.
  • He was appointed as the permanent judge of the Supreme Court on May 27, 2014.
