Centre Approves Rs 1,146.12 cr Cyclone ‘Gaja’ Assistance for Tamil Nadu

  • The High-Level Committee (HLC) chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh approved additional assistance of Rs 1,146.12 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to Tamil Nadu, which was affected by cyclone ‘Gaja’ recently.
  • The Central government had released assistance of Rs 353.70 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) as an interim relief to the state.
  • Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh and Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Dr Rajiv Kumar are the members of the HLC.

Indian Railways to grant fare concession to transgender senior citizens

  • The Indian Railways has decided to grant 40% concession in passenger fares to transgender senior citizens (60 years or above).
  • It will be available from 1st January 2019.
  • Though a column for transgender (T) was introduced in the reservation form, the concession was not admissible to them.

Sheikh Hasina Wins 3rd Consecutive Term as PM of Bangladesh

  • Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s alliance won Bangladesh’s election with a thumping majority, the country’s Election Commission announced.
  • It gave her a third straight term following a vote that the opposition rejected as rigged.
  • The win consolidated Hasina’s decade-long rule over Bangladesh.
  • The alliance dominated by her Awami League, seen as close to regional power India, won 287 of the 298 seats for which results have been declared, the commission said.
  • There are 300 constituencies in the country. The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which boycotted the last poll in 2014, won just six seats.

Smriti Mandhana Named ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year

  • India’s stylish opener Smriti Mandhana has been named as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Cricketer of the Year.
  • The 22-year-old, who has also been named as the ICC Women’s ODI Player of the Year, achieved the feat by giving some exceptional performances throughout the year.
  • She scored 669 runs at an average of 66.90 in 12 ODIs and 622 runs at a strike-rate of 130.67 in 25 T20Is from January 1 to December 31, 2018. She is currently ranked fourth in the ICC Women’s Players Rankings for ODI Batters and 10th in the ICC Women’s Players Rankings for T20I Batters.

Hyderabad gets 27th place among 4,041 cities in Swachh survekshan award

  • The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation was awarded Best Capital City in the Solid Waste Management in the Swachh Survekshan 2018 rankings.
  • According to a press release, the Swachh Survekashan survey ranks cities on various sanitation parameters.
  • The GHMC was also at the 27th place among 4,041 cities.
  • The GHMC said that as a part of the Swachh Survekshan 2019, maintaining timing of toilets, i.e., from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. and proper signage will be an important parameter. As a part of this, the GHMC has requested the Hyderabad Metro Rail to ensure that public toilets in all metro corridors are open from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Norman Gimbel, Grammy and Oscar Winning Lyricist Passes Away

  • Norman Gimbel, the Oscar and Grammy-winning lyricist, has passed away at the age of 91. Gimbel’s work included Killing Me Softly with His Song – recorded by Roberta Flack, the Fugees and others – and the theme to TV series Happy Days.
  • Norman Gimbel was born in Brooklyn. His early successes included the lyrics to Andy Williams’s 1956 hit single Canadian Sunset. In 1984 Gimbel was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Veteran filmmaker Mrinal Sen passes away

  • Legendary filmmaker Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee Mrinal Sen(95-years) passed away due to age-related ailments in Kolkata.
  • He was the recipient of 12 international film awards including Cannes Film Festival.
  • Mrinal Sen was also a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association.

Book ‘Early Indians: The Story of Our Ancestors and Where We Came From’ By Tony Joseph Released

  • The book titled “Early Indians: The Story of Our Ancestors and Where We Came From” written by Tony Joseph was released.
  • The book talks about the migration of the First Indians also known as ‘Aryans’ who arrived here 65,000 years ago.

Delhi Metro’s Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 corridor opens today

  • Union Minister Hardeep S Puri & Deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sisodia jointly flag off Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 section of Pink Line of Delhi Metro.
  • Around ten-kilometre stretch is the extension of 59 kilometres long Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor.
  • The section has five stations namely Vinoba Puri, Ashram, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Mayur Vihar -I and Mayur Vihar Pocket-1.
  • It will be a major boon for the commuters of prominent areas like Ashram and Mayur Vihar.
  • With the opening of this section, the Delhi Metro network has become 327 kilometres long with 236 Metro stations.
