PM Modi laid the foundation stones of City Gas Distribution projects

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones of City Gas Distribution (CGD) projects in 129 districts from New Delhi.
  • It will herald the availability of convenient, environment-friendly and cheaper natural gas for almost half of the country’s population spread across 26 States and Union Territories.
  • Till September 2018, 96 cities and in different parts of the country were covered for development of CGD networks.
  • About 46.5 lakh households and 32 lakh CNG vehicles are availing the benefit of clean fuel through existing CGD networks.

J&K Assembly dissolved after rival alliances stake claim to form govt

  • Jammu and Kashmir Governor ‘Satyapal Malik’ dissolved the State Assembly after rival alliances staked claim to form the government.
  • Earlier, the state assembly was kept in suspended animation so that political parties could explore the possibility of forming a new government.
  • The Governor’s rule was imposed in the state on 19th June for a 6-month period following the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government after BJP withdrew its support.
  • The State will now be placed under President’s rule on December 20 after the six months tenure of Governor’s rule comes to an end.

ConMac 2018 starts in Kathmandu

  • Nepal’s Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth has inaugurated an exhibition of construction equipment and technology- ‘ConMac 2018’ at Bhaktapur (near Kathmandu) in Nepal.
  • The Embassy of India in Nepal and CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) jointly organized this exhibition of construction equipment and technology- ‘ConMac 2018’.
  • The objective of the exhibition is to further enhance high-level engagements between construction industry of the two countries.

First batsman to score 11,000 runs in Ranji

  • On 21 November 2018, Veteran cricketer Wasim Jaffer became the first batsman to score 11,000 runs in Ranji Trophy.
  • Jaffer, who plays for Vidarbha, achieved the feat on day two of the Ranji Trophy match against Baroda.
  • He has played 31 Tests and two One-Day Internationals for India.
  • He last played for India in April 2008.

CSE Wins Indira Gandhi Peace Prize

  • Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has won this year’s Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, an award conferred by Indira Gandhi Trust each year on the late Prime Minister’s birth anniversary.
  • The international jury for the awards was headed by former President Pranab Mukherjee.
  • The CSE was established in 1980 under the leadership of the late Anil Agarwal and is presently headed by Sunita Narain.

SBM appointed Sidharth Rath as MD

  • On 21 November 2018, State Bank of Mauritius (SBM-India) has appointed Sidharth Rath as its Managing Director (MD).
  • He was with Axis Bank as the Group Executive and Head of Corporate, Transaction Banking, and International Banking.
  • SBM has received the licence from Reserve Bank of India to operate as a scheduled commercial bank in India with effect from December 1, 2018.

Abhijit Bose named WhatsApp India Head

  • On 21 November 2018, WhatsApp named Abhijit Bose as its India Head.
  • He will join the WhatsApp in early 2019 and will build WhatsApp’s first full country team outside of California.
  • He was the co-founder of Ezetap, an electronic payments company.

Youngest-ever goodwill ambassador appointed

  • British actress Millie Bobby Brown was named the newest United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Goodwill Ambassador.
  • She is the youngest person ever to be appointed as the UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador.
  • As a Goodwil Ambassador, she will use her global platform to raise awareness of children’s rights and issues affecting young people.

Four new horned frogs discovered

  • Four new species of horned frogs have been discovered in Himalayan regions of Northeast India.
  • They were discovered by a team of biologists from Delhi University, University College Dublin and the National Museum (UK).
  • The four new Indian species are Himalayan horned frog; the Garo white-lipped horned frog; the Yellow spotted white-lipped horned frog; and the Giant Himalayan horned frog.

Gujarat launches an intensive project to conserve Gir lions

  • The Gujarat government has launched Rs. 351-crore project for the conservation of the Gir lions.
  • The project is launched in the backdrop of the Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) outbreak that claimed 23 Asiatic lion lives in their only dwelling Gir National park in Saurashtra.
  • This intensive project will also include an emergency ambulance van akin to the 108 emergency services.
  • Canine distemper is a viral disease that affects a wide variety of animal families, including domestic and wild species.

Bhadohi got ‘export excellence’ tag

  • Badohi in Uttar Pradesh has got the ‘export excellence’ tag from the Government of India.
  • It is known for its hand-woven carpets around the world.
  • Under the tag, carpet makers will get financial assistance from the central government to procure modern machines, improve export infrastructure.
  • The status was granted by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, under the Commerce Ministry.
