UP becomes 3rd state to approve 10% general category quota

  • Uttar Pradesh government on Friday approved 10% reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the economically weaker sections in general category.
  • Gujarat and Jharkhand are the two other states to incorporate the additional quota.
  • The Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed by the Parliament on January 9 and was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind on January 12.

President Kovind inaugurates Gandhian Resurgence Summit at Prayagraj Kumbh

  • President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the three- day Gandhian Resurgence Summit at Parmarth Niketan camp at the ongoing Prayagraj Kumbh.
  • About 300 Gandhians from different parts of the country and organisations are participating in the Summit.
  • Earlier, First Lady Ms Savita Kovind honoured 9 women from traditional boat community for their contribution to the Kumbh.
  • More than one thousand CCTV cameras have been installed in the Mela for the purpose.
  • Prayagraj Kumbh 2019 will be remembered for the opening of doors to Akshaya Vat (sacred tree) and Saraswati Koop (sacred well) for common men after 450 years. It was a long pending demand of the devotees.

Judge who ousted Nawaz Sharif takes oath as Pak Chief Justice

  • Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, who was part of the bench that disqualified former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif from holding office over corruption, took oath as the Chief Justice of Pakistan on Friday.
  • He was also part of the bench that acquitted Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy charges.

Saina beats Okuhara to enter Malaysia Masters semi-finals

  • India’s Saina Nehwal registered a straight-game win over former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan to enter the women’s singles semifinals of the $350,000 Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
  • The 28-year-old, who had won the title in 2017, will next face three-time world champion and Rio 2016 gold-winner Carolina Marin of Spain on Saturday.

Prabhat Singh appointed DG in NHRC

  • According to the Personnel Ministry order, Senior IPS officer Prabhat Singh has been appointed as Director General (Investigation) in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) (till 30th April 2020)
  • Currently, Prabhat Singh is Special Director, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
  • S N Pradhan (1988 batch IPS officer – Jharkhand cadre) has been appointed Director General (DG) of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
  • Currently, Mr. Pradhan is the Joint Secretary of the ministry of The Department of Development of Eastern Region (DoNER).

After removal from CBI, Rakesh Asthana made aviation security chief

  • After the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet curtailed his tenure as the CBI Special Director, Rakesh Asthana has been appointed as the chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
  • Asthana and three other CBI officers’ tenure was cut short with immediate effect.
  • Last week, CBI Director Alok Verma was moved to fire services department, following which Verma announced his resignation.

India-Myanmar joint training exercise begins in Chandimandir

  • India-Myanmar bilateral army exercise ‘IMBEX 2018-19’ (2nd edition) commenced at Chandimandir Military Station at Chandigarh.
  • The aim of this six days joint training programme is to train the Myanmar delegation for participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations under the UN flag.
  • The exercise includes the participation of 15 officers from the Myanmar Army and 15 officers from the Indian Army.

  • Former president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Vishnu Hari Dalmia (91-years) passed away in Delhi.
  • Dalmia played a crucial role in the Ram Janambhumi agitation.
  • He had also served as ‘Prabandh Nyasi’ (managing trustee) of Sri Krishna Janmasthan Mathura.

Bhopal to become India's first city to have crematorium for cows

  • India’s first crematorium for cows, named ‘gau mukti dham’, will soon be built in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal, city’s Mayor Alok Sharma informed on Thursday.
  • While the Bhopal Municipal Corporation is looking for a piece of land for the crematorium, the state’s Animal Husbandry Minister Lakhan Singh has directed officials to start a drive to clear the city off stray cattle.

'World's oldest' surviving periodic table found in Scotland

  • Experts have dated a periodic table chart found in Scotland’s University of St Andrews as being printed between 1879 and 1886, believed to be the oldest surviving periodic table.
  • The chart was found at the University’s School of Chemistry in 2014.
  • It contains elements gallium and scandium, discovered in 1875 and 1879 respectively, while germanium, discovered in 1886, is missing.

Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurates ISRO's UNNATI programme in Bengaluru

  • The Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has inaugurated the UNNATI- (Unispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training) programme organized by ISRO in Bengaluru.
  • ISRO will train 90 officials from 45 countries in three batches.
  • The course will include theoretical work, as well as training on assembly, integration and testing of nano-satellites.
  • UNNATI is an initiative by ISRO to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations conference on the exploration and peaceful uses of outer space (UNISPACE-50).
