Legendary Musician Annapurna Devi Passes Away
Legendary musician Annapurna Devi has passed away in Mumbai at the age of 91.
The musician had been suffering from age related ailments for the past few years.
She was an Indian surbahar player of Hindustani classical music and the daughter and disciple of Allauddin Khan.
She was married to sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.
International Day for Disaster Reduction: 13th October
The International Day for Disaster Reduction is observed across the world on October 13 to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.
The day celebrated how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the risks associated with them.
The theme of the 2018 International Day for Disaster Reduction is ‘Reducing Disaster Economic Losses’.
India Elected To UN Human Rights Council with Most Number of Votes
India has been elected to the United Nations’ top human rights body for a period of three years beginning January 1, 2019, getting 188 votes in the Asia-Pacific category, the highest number of votes among all candidates.
The 193-member UN General Assembly held elections for new members to the UN Human Rights Council. Countries needed a minimum of 97 votes to get elected to the Council.
India was vying for a seat in the Asia Pacific category. In the Asia Pacific category, India got 188 votes followed by Fiji with 187 votes, Bangladesh 178, Bahrain and Philippines 165 each.
Online portal for grants of IEM and IL
Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has developed a new online portal for facilitating filing of online applications for Industrial Entrepreneurs’ Memorandum (IEM) and Industrial Licence (IL) under Arms Act as well as Industries (Development & Regulation) [I(D&R)] Act, 1951 at https://services.dipp.gov.in.
This portal will be available for public with effect from 16th October 2018.
Applications for IEM and IL under I(D&R) Act, 1951 are currently accepted through E-biz portal whereas applications for manufacture of defence items under Arms Act are received physically.
India-Azerbaijan sign protocol on trade and economic, science and technology cooperation
India and Azerbaijan has signed protocol on trade and economic, science and technology cooperation at 5th meeting of India-Azerbaijan Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade and Economic, Science and Technology Cooperation (IA-IGC).
The meeting was co-chaired by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Government of Republic of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev.
India Remains Polio-Free: UNICEF, WHO
In a joint statement, the UNICEF and the WHO said the risk of children getting vaccine derived poliovirus was “minimal” in India because of a high routine immunisation coverage in the country.
The two global agencies also asserted that all vaccines provided under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) are safe and urged people to get their children vaccinated not only for their protection but also to keep Indian polio free.
It stated that type 2 poliovirus containing vaccine has been phased out globally.
Deepa Malik wins second bronze at Asian Para Games
Rio Paralympics silver-medallist Deepa Malik bagged her second medal at the ongoing competition when she clinched the bronze in the women’s F51/52/53s discus throw.
Deepa produced her best effort in her fourth attempt, a 9.67 metre throw to claim the third spot.
Elnaz Darabian of Iran took home the gold and set a new Asian record with her best throw of 10.71m.
Fatema Nedham of Bahrain won the silver with an effort of 9.87m.
Collegium recommends CJs for five High Courts
The Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has recommended appointment of Justices N.H. Patil and D.K. Gupta as chief justices of the Bombay and Calcutta High Courts.
It recommended Justices Ramesh Ranganathan, A.S. Bopanna and Vijai Kumar Bist for appointment as chief justices of the High Courts of Uttarakhand, Gauhati and Sikkim, respectively.
The Collegium, also comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, noted in its resolutions that while Justice Patil is currently the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Gupta is functioning as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
