An inland waterways terminal on River Ganga in Varanasi dedicated to nation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first multi-modal terminal on the Ganga river in Varanasi on November 12 under a project aimed at promoting inland waterways as a cheaper and more environment-friendly means of transport.
  • This is the first of the three such terminals and two inter-modal terminals being constructed on the river.
  • The multi-modal terminals are being built as part of the central government’s Jal Marg Vikas Project that aims to develop the stretch of the river Ganga between Varanasi and Haldia for navigation of large vessels weighing up to 1,500-2,000 tonnes.
  • The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is the project implementing agency.

33rd ASEAN summit begins in Singapore

  • Singapore will host the 33rd ASEAN Summit at Suntec Singapore Convention Centre from Sunday (Nov 11) to Nov 15. Singapore is the current chairman of the 10-member regional bloc ASEAN in 2018.
  • Next chairmanship of ASEAN bloc goes to Thailand on Nov 15.
  • Indian PM Narendra Modi will also attend the ASEAN summit and Regional Economic Cooperation Partnership (RECP) at Singapore.

Pilot of London-bound Air India flight caught drunk before takeoff

  • An Air India Delhi-London flight was delayed after the pilot of the carrier was caught drunk ahead of takeoff on Sunday.
  • Arvind Kathpalia was declared ‘unfit to fly’ after failing the breath analyser test twice and was grounded by the airline.
  • Kathpalia was earlier suspended for three months in 2017 for missing the mandatory breath analyser test.

  • Payippadan Chundan won the 66th Nehru Trophy Boat Race, that took place in Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad, Kerala.
  • The event scheduled to be held on August 11 was postponed due to the floods.

  • South Africa defeated Australia by 40 runs in the final ODI at Hobart on Sunday to clinch the three-match series 2-1.
  • It was Australia’s 11th defeat in 13 ODIs this year. Further, the match witnessed South African captain Faf du Plessis and David Miller register a fourth-wicket partnership of 252 runs, the highest ever ODI stand against Australia.

  • To commemorate National Education Day, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has requested schools to organize various programs on the importance of education and the nation’s commitment to all aspects of education.

Quantum 'compass' to provide navigation without using GPS

  • Scientists in the UK have demonstrated a “commercially viable” quantum accelerometer or ‘compass’ that could provide navigation without GPS or other satellite technology.
  • The device uses lasers to cool atoms to extremely low temperatures, and then measures their quantum wave properties as they respond to acceleration.
  • Currently, it is ready to use for ships, trains and other large vehicles only

Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ananth Kumar Passes Away

  • Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, and Chemicals and Fertilizers H.N. Ananth Kumar, also a senior BJP leader from the State passed away in Bengaluru.
  • He was 59.
  • Mr Kumar was diagnosed with lung cancer at an advanced stage in June.
  • A six-time member of parliament from Bengaluru South Lok Sabha seat, Mr. Kumar was representing it continuously since 1996.

  • The Goa government has announced a ban on import of fish into the state for six months.
  • The decision was taken against the backdrop of a scare in the coastal state that formalin, a potential cancer-causing chemical, was being used to preserved fish.

  • The official Twitter handle of Mumbai Police has used lyrics from American pop singer Ariana Grande’s song ‘Thank U, next’ to highlight road safety.
  • It posted a collage of pictures of school girls at a zebra crossing, a traffic policeman and a family travelling on a two-wheeler without helmets and the rider using a mobile phone.
