Report on ‘toxic’ talc worries India
- The debate over whether talcum powder poses serious health risks is in the spotlight again.
- A risk assessment draft on talc published by Health Canada, the country’s public health department, states that talcum powder is harmful to the lungs when inhaled during breathing and could possibly cause ovarian cancer when used by women in the genital area.
- The draft, which was opened for public comments on Saturday, would be confirmed in a final assessment that would entail Canada adding talc to a list of toxic substances if the proposed conclusions are confirmed at the end of a 60-day feedback period.
After INLD split, Dushyant launches 'Jannayak Janta Party'
- Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala’s grandson Dushyant Chautala on Sunday launched a new political outfit, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) in Haryana’s Jind.
- Hisar MP Dushyant was recently expelled from Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on the grounds of ‘indiscipline’.
- Addressing a rally, Dushyant urged the public to oust the Congress, the BJP and the INLD from power.

OPEC agrees to cut oil production
- Moving to prop up prices, OPEC and its oil-producing allies agreed on 07 Dec to cut production by 1.2 million barrels a day despite pressure from President Trump to maintain current output levels and keep prices low.
- Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s de facto leader, will make the biggest cut. Russia, which is not an OPEC member but is an increasingly important factor in global oil markets, will account for much of the rest.
- Members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries are supposed to make cuts totaling 800,000 barrels a day from an October baseline, with Russia and other nonmembers cutting 400,000 barrels a day.
Android Co-founder Rubin's startup buys India’s CloudMagic
- Father of Android Andy Rubin’s startup Essential Products has acquired Indian origin e-mail management startup CloudMagic for an undisclosed amount.
- This comes after CloudMagic shut down its subscription-based premium email service Newton in September.
- “We are always on the lookout for companies with great technology and talent to help accelerate our product roadmap,” Essential Products said.
Therapy apps may help beat stress
- Scientists have found that a series of self-guided, internet-based therapy platforms effectively reduce depression.
- Researchers from Indiana University (IU) in the U.S. reviewed 21 pre-existing studies with a total of 4,781 participants.
- In the past several years, many internet-based apps and websites have made claims to treat depression.
- The study, published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, focussed on those applications that provide treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy, which focuses on changing thought patterns and behaviour to alleviate symptoms of depression.
Mushirul Hasan, noted historian, passes away
- Historian Mushirul Hasan, who has extensively written on India’s Partition, passed away on Monday morning.
- He was 69 years old.
- He is survived by his wife Zoya Hasan, a political scientist and academician.
TN moves SC for full-time Chairman for Cauvery Authority
- Tamil Nadu Government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a full-time Chairperson for the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).
- The Authority has been formed following the final verdict of the Supreme Court. Currently, the Central Water Commission CWC chairperson is holding additional charge of the Authority as well.
- Tamil Nadu has cited the apex court verdict in the Cauvery dispute which states that Karnataka could not impound water by constructing any dam without the consent of lower riparian state.
Mumbai Airport handles record 1,007 flights in a single day
- Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday handled 1,007 flights in a day, beating its earlier 24-hour record of 1,003 flights earlier this year.
- This was amid the pre-wedding party of Isha Ambani, daughter of industrialist Mukesh Ambani, at Rajasthan’s Udaipur.
- Politicians, corporate heads and Bollywood stars reportedly flew in private jets from Mumbai for the party.
