Swachh Bharat Mission helped reduce ground water contamination: UNICEF
- The substantial reductions in ground water contamination may potentially be attributed to the improvement in sanitation and hygiene practices.
- Supportive systems such as regular monitoring and behaviour change messaging, which have all been critical aspects of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), also helped reduce ground water contamination.
The 14th Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit was held in Mecca
- The 14th summit of the OIC was held in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and hosted by Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.
- The official purpose of meeting was to address ‘current issues in Muslim world’ and ‘recent developments in a number of OIC member states.
- Political leaders and heads of state from Islamic nations unanimously condemned countries including United Sates decision of making “illegal and irresponsible decision” to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
2nd Global Disability Summit held in Argentina
- The second edition of Global Disability Summit will be held in at Buenos Aires, Argentina from 6-8 June 2019.
- It is being organised by International Alliance Disability (IDA) and Latin American Network of Non-Governmental Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and their Families (RIADIS). 2nd Global Disability Summit
- Its main objective is to Deliberate on issues across the world concerning empowerment and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and to work out mechanism for enabling them to live an independent and dignified life.
Ashish Ray pens down India's journey in WCs in new book
- Celebrated cricket broadcaster Ashish Ray has come out with a new book titled “Cricket World Cup The Indian Challenge”, where he has penned down the journey of Indian cricket at the World Cups since the inaugural edition in 1975.
- The book takes down the readers to the beautiful journey India has witnessed ever since West Indies won the 60-over World Cup held in England in 1975.
- The book reviews all tournaments from 1975 to 2015 and also previews the ongoing 2019 World Cup in England and Wales.
Gianni Infantino re-elected FIFA president for 2nd term
- Gianni Infantino (49) re-elected as President of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), a global governing body of football for second term.
- He was declared winner unopposed at 2019 FIFA Congress held in Paris, France as he was the only candidate contesting for the post.
- He will now have tenure of four-year until 2023. He was first elected in February 2016 after Sepp Blatter was ousted amidst corruption investigations.
Google's Sunder Pichai and Nasdaq's Friedman to receive 2019 Global Leadership Award
- Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai & Nasdaq president Adena Friedman have been chosen for the prestigious Global Leadership Awards 2019 by business advocacy group USIBC in recognition of the two companies’ contribution as the leading technology-driven platforms.
- The award would be conferred upon Sundar Pichai, and Friedman during the next week’s ‘India Ideas Summit’
- With companies like Google and Nasdaq at the forefront, bilateral trade in goods and services has grown by nearly 150%.
'Cyclone man' Mrutyunjay Mohapatra appointed IMD chief
- Renowned scientist and cyclone warning specialist Mrutyunjay Mohapatra was appointed as the chief of IMD, according to a Personnel Ministry order.
- He has been appointed as DG of Meteorology, IMD, for a period of 5 years.
- He will assume charge in August.
- The IMD is responsible for weather and climate-related forecasts in the country
- Prior to joining the IMD, Mohapatra, who did his Masters in Physics, joined the DRDO laboratory in Chandipur.
Army's training exercise, “Kharga Prahar” held in Punjab
- The exercise “Kharga Prahar”, was undertaken in the plains of Punjab by various units and formations of Army’s Kharga Corps.
- The components of the Indian Air Force also participated in the exercise.
- “Validation of latest operational concepts designed to deliver a swift punitive blow to the adversary were the key features of this exercise,”
India Test Fires Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile from Chandipur in Odisha.
- Described as the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile with high rate of precision and accuracy, BrahMos can be fired from land, sea and air.
- BrahMos is a joint venture between the DRDO and the NPOM(a Russian military technology firm) of Russia.
- The anti-ship version of the missile was launched around noon from the launch complex-3 of the ITR
- The missile, with a strike range of around 290 km, is a strategic asset for India as it would act as a deterrence against any possible threats from China and Pakistan.
Delhi Metro: India's first metro project to receive power from waste-to-energy
- Delhi Metro has become the first ever metro project in the country to receive power generated from a waste-to-energy plant.
- It achieved this feat after receiving 2 MW power from 12 MW capacity waste-to-energy plant set up in Ghazipur.
- The green power is being used by Delhi Metro for meeting the operational requirements of its Pink Line.
- It will take approximately 17.5 million units per annum from this plant.
