750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desikan

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu unveiled a postage stamp to commemorate the 750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desikan in New Delhi on May 2, 2019.
  • He was a poet, devotee, philosopher and master-teacher (desikan) in the post-Ramanuja period.
  • The stamp was released by the Indian postal department to commemorate the great philosopher’s life and highly valued works.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a new measure that aims to expand government control over the Internet.
  • It would enable the creation of a national network, able to operate separately from the rest of the world.
  • The new law aims to protect Russia from foreign online restrictions by creating a “sustainable, secure and fully functioning” local internet.

UK Parliament 1st in World to Declare Climate Emergency

  • The UK parliament became the first national legislative body in the world to declare a climate change emergency.
  • The motion was approved without a vote and registers the views of the House of Commons without compelling the government to act on any particular policy proposal.
  • It also calls for the government to work towards carbon neutrality before 2050 and for ministers to draft proposals within the next 6 months to restore the country’s environment and create a “zero waste economy.”

  • Huawei Technologies Co overtook Apple Inc to claim the No. 2 spot in smartphones making in the first quarter, moving a step closer to its avowed ambition of displacing Samsung at the top of the market.

Bajrang Punia Wins Gold in Wrestling

  • Bajrang Punia won the gold medal in the Ali Aliyev wrestling tournament held in Kaspiisk, Russia.
  • In his final bout, he defeated Russian Viktor Rassadin by 13-8 in men’s 65kg freestyle.
  • The 25-year-old currently holds the number one spot in World Wrestling Rankings.

Former ISRO Chairman Awarded France’s Highest Civilian Honour

  • Former ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar was conferred with France’s highest civilian honour, Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Legion d’Honneur, for his contribution to India-France space cooperation.
  • Kumar was conferred with the prestigious honour by France’s Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler on behalf of the French President.
  • He currently holds the Chair of the ISRO Committee on Earth Observation Satellites.

BSE Appoints First Independent Woman Director Jayshree Vyas To board

  • BSE, formerly known as the Bombay Stock Exchange, has appointed its first independent woman director Jayshree Vyas.
  • BSE already has two non-executive women directors namely Usha Sangwan and Rajeshree Sabnavis on its Board.
  • Vyas is a professionally-qualified chartered accountant, working as the managing director of Shree Mahila Sewa Sahakari Bank, Ahmedabad, since 1986.
  • She helped in launching the first financial literacy programme in Sewa Bank in 2001.

Mangaluru Police Gets an All-women Patrol Unit “Rani Abbakka Force”

  • Mangaluru City Police has launched an all-women police patrol unit ‘Rani Abbakka Force’.
  • The force will cover the malls, beaches, educational institutions, places of religious importance, and the public transport system and handle issues related to eve-teasing and chain-snatching, among others.
  • All-women police patrol force has been named after the 16th-century warrior of coastal Karnataka, Queen Abbakka of Ullal near Mangaluru, who fought the Portuguese in the 16th century.

  • It claimed close to three lakh lives between 2012 and 2016,
